I knew what he had meant. We had both had our struggles in our lives, had been through a lot of shit to get here. However, I felt like the moment I allowed myself to be happy, it would all be ripped away, and the thought terrified me. “It’s going to be fine,” I said, staying strong for both of us. I was going to fight for him, for this, for our future.

I wasn’t going to let my father take Lucas or any future we had together away from me.

He rolled us over and dislodged himself from me, rising out of bed without a word. I watched Lucas go, a lump in my throat. The tension was back in his shoulders, and I couldn’t make it disappear, not until we figured out how to defeat my father and his minions. Carmine D’Agostino wasn’t going to let me be happy.

He wasn’t going to let Nico live his best life with Rory and his children, my father’s grandchildren. Carmine wasn’t interested in becoming the white-haired grandpa who spoiled his grandchildren. No, he wanted them for his own plans, to give him an edge over even his own son. I wouldn’t put it past him to kill his own grandchildren, given the chance. After all, he had already threatened to do just that.

My breath caught, and a hand drifted to my stomach, caressing it to make sure that he or she was safe. Now I had the same fears my brother had had about Rory when he found out that she was pregnant.

Now I understood why he had panicked as he had.

I had that same sort of panic. I couldn’t let my father get anywhere near this child, nor could I let him get near Lucas. I had to protect them both because if I didn’t, I could lose everything.

The thought was unbearable.
