“Tell me about your day,” I change the subject.

“Meetings, paperwork, phone calls. But I have plans with a beautiful woman tonight.”

“Oh yeah? Should I be jealous?” I tease.

“You definitely should be. She’s incredibly gorgeous, funny and amazing in bed.” He whispers the last part, and a blush floods my cheeks.

“Daniel!” I gasp.

“I’m just saying.” He chuckles. I’m about to say something back when I notice my professor approaching. Class wasn’t starting yet, but at least I’d be able to sit inside.

“My professor just got here,”

“Another man got your attention, damn.” He fake sighs.

“Actually a woman,” I laugh. “Your sexism is noted.”

“Another woman? I might be into that.” He chuckles. “Have a great class.”

We hang up, and I slide into a seat in the front while my professor sets up the lecture. Class goes by slower than expected. For once, I find myself watching the clock. When my professor lets us out 5 minutes early, I all but dash out the door to my car. I could be to Daniel’s apartment in twenty minutes. Fifteen with no traffic.

ChapterEight

“I’ve never heard you talk about a girl like this before. Who are you and what have you done with my brother?” Kennedy laughs on the other end of my AirPods.

“She’s justdifferent. In a good way.” I explain.

“As long as she makes you happy, man. It sounds like you’re falling in love with her.” She doesn’t ask, just notes.

“It’s only been a few weeks.” I don’t know what I’m feeling. I’ve never been in love like this before. The girlfriends I’ve had never lasted long enough for me to find out, and definitely never felt like this in the beginning.

“Time is just a measurement,” Kennedy counters.

“Yeah, how’s your girlfriend?” I ask. Kennedy had a bit of a record of dating around. Her girlfriends never seemed to like how close Kennedy and her best friend, Sienna, were. Not that I would tell Kennedy, but I couldn’t blame them. Those two were seriously in love with each other.

“She’s fine, but she also hasn’t met Sienna yet. I’ve been making excuses to keep them apart.”

“You know that won’t last long.” I’m not sure if I mean the distance or the relationship.

“Oh yeah, yeah, my big brother knows everything. I have a client coming in soon, so let me go, but be sure to tell my future sister-in-law hello,” she laughs and hangs up.

She was currently running her own hair salon in New York City, so she was always calling at random times when she had a spare moment. Besides the three-hour time difference, we were lucky we talked as much as we did. It would be crazy not to, though. Lately, my best friend Ryan was going through his own personal issues that I tried not to bother him. Especially about if I was in love, not now anyway. He was going through a pretty raw divorce and I knew he was holding on best as he could.

I look at the stack of files on my desk and sigh. I was not in the mood to work today. I just wanted to get home and see my girl. Fuck, I was becoming whipped, and honestly, I didn’t even care.

“Daniel? Got a minute?” The voice sends shivers down my spine. I hadn’t heard Rachel’s voice in months. I thought she had transferred departments.

“Uh, yeah, what’s up?” I gesture to the seat across from me, and she sits down, crossing her legs.

“I’m going to be working in the office next door for a few months while Abby goes on maternity leave. Before then, I wanted to clear the air. I hope it will not be uncomfortable, and we can be professional.” Her blonde hair and light features remind me of Holly, but I guess that’s what people mean by having a type.

“Of course.” I nod. Rachel was the last woman I dated. Granted, dating someone I worked with wasn’t the brightest idea, but I figured at least she’d understand my long hours since she worked similar ones.

She did at first until work came before her. Then she got resentful, even tried taking projects of mine, so I’d have more time to spend with her after work. We tried to make it work, until eventually we broke up, and she asked to be transferred to another department.

“Thank you,” she smiles and stands up. “If you ever wanted to try again, I’m not seeing anyone.” Well, that was completely out of left field.

“Uh, I actually am.” I shift uncomfortably.
