“Can I be blunt?” Ruby asks.

“Okay,” I say, but I’m not sure what’s about to come out of her mouth.

“Has Daniel ever given you a reason before this for you not to trust him?”

“Well, no.” I frown.

“And do you think, honestly, anything was going on between him and this woman?”

“Well, no.” I say again. Daniel would never cheat on me. That’s something I’m almost positive about.

“Then what are you worried about? Yes, he should have told you. But what if he truly didn’t think it was a big deal?” Ruby asks.

I pause to process her words.

“It sounds like you’re looking for a reason for it not to work, and maybe I’m wrong. But I think you should at least hear him out before you write him off completely.” Ruby continues.

I just nod, knowing she’s probably right. I owed it to him to at least hear him out.

ChapterThirteen

“Can you give me a ride?” I growl at no one in particular. Holly taking off without me left me stranded, and the last thing I wanted was to ask for help. It was embarrassing enough. We were having our first fight in front of everyone.

“I got you.” Marshall grabs his keys and kisses Daphne goodbye.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Marshall asks when we’re alone.

“No.” I retort. I’m thankful Marshall doesn’t push it further.

In a matter of minutes, my relationship blew up in front of me. Holly hadn’t even given me a chance to explain myself. She just took off. Did she really think of me as someone who could cheat on her? Yeah, I hadn’t told her about Rachel, but that’s because there wasnothinggoing on between us. Didn’t it matter that the woman literally repulsed me? I guess not.

“Don’t write her off, maybe give her some time and then try reaching out.” Marshall says as we pull up to my house.

“Yeah,” I scoff and slam the door behind me. How had he ended up on her side in this?

I walk into my apartment and grumble, realizing there were remnants of Holly everywhere. She had practically been living with me the last few days. I throw around all her stuff into a garbage bag. Her T-shirts and sweaters were all around my apartment. A pair of sneakers by the door, her makeup in my bathroom, and her pjs on the floor next to the bed. I didn’t want to look at it right now. I sit on the edge of my bed and throw my head in my hands.

I’m too angry to process anything, so I decide to go for a run. Needing to clear my head, I throw on my sneakers and drive down to Seaside. I put my earbuds in and take off, letting the familiar path quiet my head.

Three miles later, I’m stopping for water in one shop when my phone rings. Kennedy always had a knack for timing. I pay for my water and answer before the last ring.

“What’s up Kenny?” I take a seat on the bench outside.

“Do. not. call. Me. That.” She growls.

“Okay, okay, lil sis, what’s up?” I chuckle.

“I was just calling to say hello. You’ve been quite busy lately. Hard to talk to you when you’re so busy.” She laughs.

“Sorry, work and…” My chest clenches thinking about Holly.

“Yes, Holly. How is your beautiful girlfriend?”

“Who knows?” I growl. I know I shouldn’t be upset with Kennedy for asking, but everything was still raw.

“Whoa, what happened?” Kennedy goes quiet, waiting for me to explain. I do. It always felt better talking things out with her.

“She just assumed I’d cheat on her, but Rachel means absolutely nothing to me. You know that!”
