“He was not hidden!”

“It’s okay, I’m glad we’re meeting now.” Cody smiles. “There’s not too much to tell, I own and run a bar in the city but I’m in the process of opening up a second location.”

“Wow, that’s impressive. Your first location must be doing pretty well for that?”

“Yeah, I run it with my best friend Sawyer. We’re co-owners,” he explains.

“Riley’s girlfriend,” I clarify for my dad.

“Ah, I love Riley. Such a good friend she’s been to this one.”

“Yeah, Riley is incredibly kind,” Cody adds.

“Do you want any wine?” my dad asks us. I shake my head but Cody passes.

“I have an early meeting tomorrow. I have to finalize some stuff for the second location,” Cody explains.

“Well, how did you two meet?” my dad asks.

“Dad you don’t want to hear that story,” I groan.

“Actually, I do.”

“I saw her across a crowded bar, she was breathtaking. She flirted with me for months before we actually talked about anything real.”

“You knew I was flirting?” I look at him shocked.

“Oh, it was obvious, babe, but it was cute. That night Sawyer and Riley met is the first time we actually spoke and the rest is history.” He tells it like something out of a romance novel. I appreciate him leaving out the bit of Riley punching someone out. I look at him with a soft smile. I don’t know what I had been so worried about, they are getting along great. Cody is being himself and charming the pants off my dad.

“He’s a good one,” my dad whispers as Cody goes to the bathroom.

“What?”

“It’s my way of saying I approve. Not that you need it, but he’s someone who can make you happy. I see it now, hold on to him.” My dad winks with a smile.

I blush. I wonder how one night with him is enough for him to know he is the one for me?

“Ready?” Cody asks as we leave. I stand up to put on my jacket but I’m hit with a dizzy spell. Almost falling backward, Cody manages to catch me at the last second.

“Sweetheart, are you okay?” My dad and Cody are both at my side handing, me water and making sure I’m all right.

“Yeah, that was so weird. All of a sudden I just felt incredibly dizzy.” My head starts to pound lightly but otherwise I feel normal.

“Drink, maybe you’re dehydrated.” Cody pushes the glass of water in front of me.

“I’m okay, really.” I assure them and stand up again with no issues. They both look at me warily but I really am fine so we all say goodbye and Cody takes me home.

“So, did your dad like me?” Cody asks as we walk along the street.

“Yes, he told me so when you went to the bathroom.” I chuckle.

“He’s cool, you’re a lot like him.”

“I think that’s a compliment?” I laugh.

“It is, but you don’t look like him.” I know he is referring to my father’s dark hair and my blonde curls.

“I look like my mother,” I say quietly. I don’t remember much of her, she died in a car accident when I was younger, but I’ve seen enough photos to know that’s where my looks can from.
