“I don’t like you sometimes.” I chuckle.

“You deserve love, Luna. Don’t fuck things up with Cody because of it. Didn’t your dad just meet him?”

“Yeah? So?”

“So, to someone who’s terrified of commitment that can be triggering.” She points out like its obvious.

“How did you get so smart?” I joke.

“I read psychology books in my spare time. I’m considering going back to school for it,” she says proudly.

“Really?” I ask, surprised. I didn’t know she was even thinking about school again.

“Yeah, I think I want to help people. Its something I’m thinking about, but I want to be sure before I have to pay thousands of dollars again.”

“I understand.” Thankfully I didn’t have to worry about student loans but that was only due to my father’s generous savings.

“You really thought I was pregnant?” I laugh changing the subject.

“No, well… maybe. Not because you got fat or anything, you just said it was important and I couldn’t tell anyone.”

“Ah, okay. I was seriously rethinking this outfit,” I joke about my sweats and Cody’s t-shirt.

“You really need to tell Cody about Parker though, if he finds out another way it’ll hurt him.” She gives me a look that says ‘you know I’m right’and I sigh.

“He’s in Eternal Port Valley this week, but when he gets home I promise I will.” I know I can call him, but I need to gain the courage to explain everything to him. Besides, this isn’t exactly a phone call conversation.

“Molly, can I have the updated schedule?” I stand in my doorway, sipping the coffee she handed me. A pumpkin spice latte with extra cold foam on top. It is delicious.

“Yes, everything’s right here.” She smiles and hands me a manilla folder.

“Thank you.”

“Luna, do you have a minute?” Parker’s voice almost makes me spill my coffee.

“Nope!” I am clearly avoiding him but I don’t care. I don’t want to talk to him until I tell Cody the truth about him working here. I feel bad enough since talking to Riley, but it is worse since I haven’t seen Cody in a few days. Our opposite schedules are not helping and this isn’t something I wanted to text.

“Luna.” Parker pushes my office door open and lets himself in despite my protests.

“I don’t need anything from you right now, Parker.” I sit at my desk, hands folded waiting for him to leave.

“Why are you avoiding me?”

“I’m not,” I lie.

“You’re still the worst liar, Luna. I don’t get it. We’ve been working together for almost a month, and now all of a sudden you’re avoiding me.”

“I have other cases to work on, cases that don’t involve you.”

“Right, well Haven Winters wanted an update—”

“Great, I’ll give her a call.” I force a smile. “Will that be all?”

“I guess.” He looks defeated, I almost feel bad for him. I don’t know why he can’t just take a hint.

I go back to working, looking over the case files and checking off items on my to-do list. It has gotten a bit longer than I like, but by lunch time I have checked almost everything off. Molly brings me the Greek salad from the place around the corner for lunch and I have a working lunch in my office. Cody calls me at 1:15pm just like he does most days when he’s on his self imposed lunch break.

“Hey!” he yells into the phone.
