“Okay, so tell me. What the hell’s going on?”

We sit on the couch as I tell her about the day I found out, how Cody left and how I told him to go. About all the times I wanted to tell him, all the times I wanted to call but couldn’t, and how I wasn’t even sure how to tell her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“You’re dating his best friend, I didn’t want to ask you to keep that from her.”

“I mean, shit. No, I understand now, I thought you weren’t sure if you were keeping her but then the signs continued so I kept hoping you’d tell me.” She frowns.

“I hate to ask this of you, but Sawyer can’t know. I don’t know what I’m doing about Cody, but he can’t hear about this from her.”

“Luna, you know I love you, but you want me to lie to Sawyer?”

“No, I want you to omit it. It’s not like she’s going to ask point blank and you’ll have to lie right?”

“That’s true. I jokingly bet her weeks ago about it but she brushed me off. I doubt she’s thought twice about it.”

“Good.”

“But what’s your plan?”

“I don’t know.”

“L, I don’t mean about the baby, I mean with Cody. Are you really going to keep this from him forever?”

“Not forever, just… for now. It’s not like he can do anything right now anyway.”

“He could prepare to be a father,” she points out.

“What if he doesn’t want to be one?” I whisper. Too often have I thought about telling him and worrying about the rejection he’d give not only me but the baby too.

“I don’t know, but shouldn’t he at least get the choice?”

Chapter Nineteen

I’ve been sort of avoiding my father since I got pregnant. He is one of the people on my list I know I needed to tell, but also was afraid of his reaction. I am not married, not even dating the father, and I am floundering at work lately. It seems like any time I am trying to make a point, Parker is there to make one first. Although we haven’t spoken, it feels like he is deliberately trying to make me look bad.

“You’re not calling to cancel on me again, are you?” my father says as I call him from work.

“I’m sorry, Dad—“

“Nope, unless you’re in the hospital you can come see your father for one hour. If you don’t I will come to you,” he says grumpily. I know he will too.

“Dad—“ He cuts me off again.

“I’ll see you tonight at six.” He hangs up before I can get another word in. My father is a frustrating man, but I know he means well. He probably knows it is no coincidence he hasn’t seen me since he met Cody. I am notorious for losing a good thing.

“Molly!” I call from my desk. She’s standing in front of me eagerly, waiting for instruction.

“Can you get Parker to take the Haven meeting tonight?”

“Sure, although I should tell you…Parker asked me to change your schedule this morning. Something about Haven preferring to work with him alone,” Molly whispers and shows me the post it note in Parker’s handwriting.

“That bastard,” I growl. Grabbing the post it, I carry myself to the elevators and press the button to Parker’s floor. I brush past the receptionists and storm into his office.

“I got your note.” I throw it at his head and it bounces on the desk.

“What?” He glares at me.
