Page 4 of Unexpected Days

“I work here.”

“I have an interview,” he says calmly, like it’s not a big deal.

“You, what?” I snap my head to face him, my tone not hiding my disgust. He doesn’t say anything, just smiles at me like we’re long lost friends.

“It’s been a long time, we should catch up.” He smiles. His bright blue eyes glimmering at me mischievously.

“Are you serious?” is all I can manage but the doors open to his floor and he steps out. He holds the doors, turning around to look at me.

“You look great, Luna, come see me later and we’ll get dinner.” He lets the doors shut before I can answer and I’m stuck fuming, holding my middle finger up in the elevator alone.

Today has to be a dream no, a nightmare. No freaking way is Parker Milone working in my building. No way am I going to dinner with him. Is he out of his damn mind? I pinch my arm slightly, hoping it will wake me up. Shit, that hurts, but nope, not dreaming. Before I can think about it further, the elevator doors open and I’m ambushed by my assistant.

“Where were you? Mr. Ross has been looking for you and I’ve been stalling but I called.” Molly has never looked more nervous. Her brilliant blue eyes are as big as her face as she looks me over.

She had started as a temp after my last assistant went on maternity leave but when she decided to become a stay at home mom I insisted on keeping Molly. She is only twenty-one, taking night classes to get her law degree. I have already promised if she can pass the bar she’ll have a job here, it is so rare to see someone so determined and hardworking these days. So I understand why she looks so nervous lying to our boss about where I was. It’s not like they could fire me for being late one time, can they? I am so close to making partner I can’t take that risk.

“I woke up late at Cody’s, my phone died in the Uber.”

“An Uber? Wow, you were running late.” She looks surprised, she knows I reserve Ubers for drunk nights and to impress clients, not to race to work. “What happened to your shirt?” Her eyes are wide.

“Why is William looking for me?” I ask, ignoring her question as we walk down the hall to my office.

“He has to talk to you about the Winters case, something about her talking to the press, again.” Molly frowns.

Haven Winters was one of our celebrity clients; well, if you count instagram influencers as a celebrity. She is being sued for negatively endorsing a skin product she previously endorsed to her followers. She has a tendency to talk to the press about the case. Ross, my boss, and I had doubts about taking this case on as it was not my usual fight for the ‘little’ guy, but secretly it is a favor as Haven is Ross’s goddaughter. A fact not even Molly is privy to.

“If he calls again, tell him I’ll take care of it.” I open my office and set my stuff down on my chair, looking in my bottom drawer for a new shirt.

“You also have the meeting with Jones at eleven and then the lunch meeting at the Smith with Carlos. I’ll be right back with your coffee.” She smiles and closes the door behind her.

I quickly undo the buttons on my shirt and change into the new one. It’s pink and kind of itchy but it will do for the day, I can’t be worried about what I am wearing. What the hell is Parker doing on the eighth floor? Who works there that I can ask? I sit down and I’m about to do some digging when Molly comes back.

She drops my coffee on my desk, a hot black coffee with two sugars in my travel mug I leave here. She leaves the door open and heads back to her desk right outside my office. I sigh and try to work on my case files, but I’m too distracted.

I haven’t seen Parker in years, not since he refused my proposal, broke my heart, and left me at the airport.

Chapter Four

Ipride myself in how hard working I usually am. I’m one of the younger lawyers in the office, but it was known I was next to be made partner after Hal left last month. I had graduated the top of my class at NYU, and worked my way up from the bottom. An intern just as Molly, for Hal himself.

So why today am I having trouble focusing? Today, when I should be focused on Kate and her case, so I would get my promotion. Parker is the reason. Parker’s stupid face is etched into my mind. No matter what I do, all I can think about is the ass I made of myself this morning. Not exactly the ‘I’m doing great without you' moment you hope for when you run into an ex.

I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t imagined seeing him again, but it was more like me after making partner, maybe married to a successful lawyer and a bunch of kids. Not covered in coffee and late for work.

I’m on scrolling on Parker’s instagram page trying to figure out why he was interviewing here when Molly knocks on the door. I look at the time and realize it’s almost five, have I been scrolling for that long? It hadn’t taken long to find his profile, he is under his full name and his account is public.

“You have a call on line four.” She bites her lip.

“Who is it?” I say, putting my phone down.

“Someone on the eighth floor, says his name is Parker.”

“Hang up, I don’t know a Parker,” I lie. She nods and goes to handle it while I look at the blinking button. Why is he calling me?

“I’m sorry to bother you but he keeps calling, what do I do?” Molly asks, knocking again.

“Just keep hanging up, eventually he’ll get the idea.”
