“We’re fine,” she says, smiling up at him.

My heart constricts. They’re a picture of genuine, mutual love, and I want that so bad it hurts. Marriage, starting my own family.

Catching myself, I quickly look away, and my eyes meet Rowan’s.

“Ready to go?”

I nod. “Sure.”

Chapter 7

Grace

Iglance at Rowan frommy periphery. The silence is about to drive me mad. I’ve been waiting for him to say something about dinner since we left Mel’s and Kevin’s place so I can put him at ease, but he’s been reticent and extra broody. I’m not surprised—that’s typical Rowan.

He stares at the stoplight, which is red, drumming his fingers on the steering wheel. Although I’m dying to talk, I don’t want to be the one who brings up his family drama. I’d rather he voluntarily talk about it... if that ever happens.

Stifling a sigh, I turn to gaze out the window.

“I should have asked before. Do you want me to take you to your apartment?”

Finally, he speaks...But I’m annoyed. “Why would you ask me that?”

He lifts one eyebrow. “Because you have options...”

I turn to give him the full brunt of my glare. “I thought it was clear I intended to go home with you after dinner. I left your place, and my things are still there.”

“Okay,” is all he says and drives off when the light turns green.

“Do you not want me to go back to your place?”

“You’re always welcome there. You know that.”

He says nothing more, his eyes fixed on the road. I’m about to tear my hair out.

“Okay, I can’t take this anymore.”
