“He’s super hot, and he’s a firefighter,” Ashley muses. “He’s like a walking fantasy.”

“Wipe the drool from the corner of your mouth, Ash. You have a boyfriend,” I whisper.

“Doesn’t mean I can’t admire a fine specimen.”

“He’s not a specimen, he’s my boyfriend,” I hiss. Well, I hope he still is.

“Look at you being possessive.” Her blue eyes dance with laughter.

I bite back my reply because Rowan is now within earshot. He stops and hits me with that intense stare. The one that makes my heart do pirouettes and sends butterfly wings fluttering in my stomach.

“Grace, I’ve been looking everywhere for you. You were supposed to come back to my place...” He stops when he realizes Ashley is staring at him.

Recovering from my stupor, I give her a warning glance. She’s being so weird. Although I can’t blame her. Rowan has a commanding presence.

“Um... Rowan, this is Ashley.”

“Ah, the famous best friend.” He holds out a hand. “I’ve heard a lot about you. Nice to finally put a face to the name.”

“Bestfriend?” Ashely gushes, glancing at me. She places one hand over her heart and the other in Rowan’s.

I hold back my smile. Ashely is the biggest sap on Earth. She’ll probably get a cake to celebrate the monumental discovery that I claim her as my best friend.

“It’s nice to meet you, Rowan.” She purses her lips as her gaze jumps from him to me. “So, I’m going to get going.”

“You don’t have to,” Rowan says.

“It’s okay, I’ll see Grace tomorrow.” She grabs the rest of her tart and backs away. “Bye, Rowan,” she sings, then gives me a pointed look. I guess that means I’d better make things right with Rowan and get to that make-up sex she mentioned.

As Ashely walks out of the café, my gaze collides with Rowan’s.
