Michael narrows his gaze on me. "Who’s. The. Doctor?" His jaw tics. He runs his fingers through his hair. His fingers tremble. Damn, the man’s beside himself with worry.

"Sovrano, get the fuck out of your head," JJ barks, and his voice is like a whiplash. I jump. Sinclair and Summer freeze. It must get through to Michael, for he blinks.

"Weston!" Summer pulls away from Sinclair. "Weston’s with her."

"Weston?" Michael scowls.

"He’s one of the leading heart surgeons in the city, and one of the Seven," Sinclair interjects. "She’s in good hands."

“Why would she need a heart surgeon?” Without waiting for an answer, Michael pulls out his phone and begins to dial. "I need to call Aurora. She’s Karma’s doctor. She needs to be here."

"We do have good doctors in London. Weston is my childhood friend. I’d trust him with my life. She can’t do better than him," Sinclair assures him.

"I’m calling Aurora anyway." He spins around and walks out.

JJ turns to me. " You all right?"

The tension drains out of me, and I sink into the chair behind me.

"Hey." JJ walks over and sits down next to me. He doesn’t touch me, though. "You okay?"

I nod.

"You don’t look okay."

"It was so sudden. One moment we were all talking. The next, she’d collapsed. Luckily, the air ambulance was there in minutes."

"We have one on standby," Sinclair clarifies. He leads Summer over to take the chair across from me.

"She never told him. Karma didn’t tell Michael." Summer chews on her lower lip. "How could she not tell him?" She wrings her fingers.

"Didn’t tell Michael what?" JJ asks.

Footsteps sound behind us, then, "Didn’t tell me what?"

Michael’s already hard features seem to turn to granite. "What is it Karma didn’t tell me?"

Summer pales further. She looks up at Sinclair for help.

Lena slides closer to me and my fingers tingle. I want to put my arm around her and pull her into my side. But this time… This time, it’s up to her to make the next move. If she wants me, if she wants something more between us, then she needs to take the initiative. Oh, how I hate to admit that. But if I want to have any kind of a relationship with her, I need to respect her wishes. I’ve been in enough negotiations to know when it’s time to fall back; but holding myself back from her is the most difficult thing I’ve done in my life.

Michael curls his fingers into fists. "Is someone going to tell me what my wife is supposedly hiding from me?"

Summer bites the inside of her cheek. She clutches at Sinclair’s arm. She opens her mouth but no words come out. Sinclair places his hand on hers, and that seems to help her. "Karma, she—" Summer shakes her head. "She—"

"She what? What is it? What’s wrong with her? Can somebody please tell me?"

Summer sways, and Sinclair pulls her closer.

"Anybody?" Michael turns to us. "Canyoutell me what’s happening?"

Lena glances at Summer to find she’s buried her face in Sinclair’s chest and is weeping silently. She pales, then tips up her chin. "Michael, Karma has a heart condition."

"Excuse me?" He stares as if he’s not quite sure he heard right.
