“Lucky is my nemesis.”

She cocked a slim blond brow. “Is he now?”

“Yes. He’s like a huge Nordic god. I’m not a jealous guy, but let’s just say, he’s lucky he’s married.”

“Very happily married to boot.” She laughed. “No worries there, he only has eyes for Tish. She’d de-ball him otherwise.”

“Yeah. I know.” I shook my head. “This love stuff is nuts.”

“Tell me about it. So you’re looking for protection stones. And ones to enhance love. Am I right?”

I hadn’t fully even realized what I was looking for yet, but as always, Luna just seemed to know. “Yeah. I just want her to have stones she can carry with her, kind of touchstones, I guess.”

“Of course. That’s very sweet—and she will appreciate them more than she would flowers or candles.”

I shuddered. “Don’t say the word candles. She’s against them.”

“Van is unique.”

“Tell me about it.”

“Give me your wallet,” Luna said suddenly, and I handed it over without a blink.

She shifted the baby so she could cup her hand around the leather for a moment. Then she smiled. “Ah, yes, my instincts were on target with you. I just wanted to make sure. Even the casually witchy need to have a system of checks and balances. But your energy is very true blue.” She returned my wallet. “Write these down.”

I pulled out my phone and wrote down the crystals she mentioned. She described their colors and qualities and gave me an address where to find them.

“Today the veil is thinnest. Magic is everywhere tonight. Go now.”

I didn’t argue. She clearly knew more than I did in this realm.

“Happy Halloween, Maverick. Say hi to Vanessa for me.”

“I will. You’re…well, you’re awesome.”

Her smile glimmered. “You’re pretty awesome yourself.”

I thanked her profusely and we hugged before I went off to find the wizard. Err, witch shop in Luna Falls, owned by one Georgia Rose.

She seemed as if she’d known I was coming and directed me to the right areas to select the stones. But she wanted me to pick the ones that called to me.

When I selected a Lepidolite crystal in a heart shape, I swore Georgia’s expression melted. “She’s a lucky woman, your Vanessa.”

“Pretty sure I’m the lucky one.”

I picked out Bloodstone for a healthy birth and rose quartz for bonding with the baby and just for love. Which wasn’t a problem for us.

Vanessa loved me. I knew it. She knew it. But it just felt like a battle of wills which of us would say it first. I didn’t mind losing that particular fight, because it wasn’t one at all.

“And your babies,” Georgia added as she bagged my purchases.

“Baby, you mean?” I assumed Luna had told her.

Georgia smiled and slid the bag of crystals across the counter. “There’s magic oil in the bag. Happy Halloween, Maverick.”

I was in my truck, about to head back to town when I realized the magic oil was lube. I laughed right out loud just as a text came in.

Van: It’s almost sunset. I’m waiting.
