“Good.” She eased away from me to snap on her belt. “I hope Daisy’s okay.”

“Why wouldn’t she be?”

“Honey said her belly was pink, and she seemed itchy.”

“Huh, Brady didn’t say anything—” As the memory returned, I thunked my head on the steering wheel. “The damn treats. There were notes. I didn’t read them because I was running for the call. She’s allergic to wheat. Fucking hell.” I sat up straight and stared into the lake. “I hope I didn’t kill my brother’s dog. That would just be the capper to this night.”

Vanessa reached out to rub my thigh. “I’m sure she’s okay. Let me check in with Honey. I’m certain everything is fine.”

SEVEN

Everything was not fine, which was how we ended up at Dr. Thorn’s vet office at two-thirty in the morning.

We were sitting in the waiting room while Daisy was being examined. Maverick was testing his root strength. If he pulled on his hair any more, he was going to start losing it in clumps.

“I am not turned on by a man with male pattern hair loss, FYI.”

Alas, he did not care what I found attractive.

“I can’t believe I did this. He trusted me, and I poisoned his dog. I’m not fit to—”

“Okay, shut up. You have whined all night about your screwups, and frankly, it’s pissing me off because how can I insult you if you do it first every time?”

He didn’t smile, just buried his face in his hands. “I need some fucking sleep before I go psychotic.”

“Now I see why you wanted me to drive.” I rubbed his back, hoping I didn’t sound as awed at that fact as I was. Especially since his jerk of a colleague had probably announced twenty times how I was the worst driver-slash-parker in all of town. “Tab’s talked about Daisy’s issues before. This shouldn’t be a huge deal. Dr. Thorn will give her some meds, and she’ll be all set. You’ll just have to watch her for a couple days.”

“Not me, my brother will. And his pregnant fiancée. Hope you had a nice overnight away. Now monitor your sick dog all weekend. You’re welcome. Fuck.” He leaned back in the plastic chair and spread his ridiculously long jean-clad legs, making me focus on an area of his anatomy I should not be looking at.

I clearly couldn’t be trusted around it.

“Daisy will be fine. And look, you thought Honey would razz you about us being together, and she didn’t say a single word.”

“She’s just biding her time. Once she knows Brady’s dog will be okay, she will pounce.”

“Oh, c’mon, Honey’s sweet.”

“Sweet and lethal. You don’t know her like I do.”

“She told me you guys are super tight.”

“We are. I know of what I speak.”

I had to laugh as I braced my head in my hand on the arm of the chair. I was worn out, but half of that was from worry for Daisy. It had been a long night on a couple levels, and I had other things to be concerned about too.

At least I hadn’t promised him an answer about the morning after pill, though I had to admit, I was leaning toward not doing it.

Why, I wasn’t even sure. His impassioned plea for me not to had influenced me, and I didn’t want to let him down.

Which was just crazy.

And maybe I didn’t want to letmedown either. I definitely was not in the market for some accidental pregnancy scenario, but I also wasn’t a scared, near penniless sixteen-year-old any longer. I was a grown woman with a very healthy bank balance. I’d even invested in property.

Right next door to my maybe baby daddy. How very convenient.

“Mr. and Mrs. McNeill?” A young vet tech with short blond hair approached us holding a clipboard, giving us a tentative smile as we both jerked to our feet.

“How’s Daisy?” Mav asked, his concern over Daisy overriding everything else.
