Had witchy Luna put some kind of weird mojo onto my house? She’d probably sprinkled fairy dust in the corners while examining it with Tab and opened up my third eye or something so I was more psychic.

But if I was suddenly psychic, that meant I could intuit the future.

You’re not intuiting anything, jackass. No condom frequently means two a.m. feedings, especially in the Cove.

“Besides, having a baby doesn’t mean you have to get hitched. That’s so old-fashioned. You can successfully co-parent without a marriage license.”

“Thanks for the update, but I proposed to Bee quite a while ago, and she was not pregnant at the time.”

“I’m just saying.”

“Yeah, and I’m just saying you know better than to show your bare ass up at the Lookout.”

I couldn’t argue there.

“Technically, my ass wasn’t on display,” I muttered.

“Appreciate the bulletin. You’re a decent guy, Maverick, and a good cop. I just want you to think about your actions.”

“Did you give my brother this same speech?”

“He was never caught up at the Lookout.”

I snorted. “Right. Because that’s all this is about. Not you and everyone else in town thinking I need to be ‘guided.’ Even Christian tried to do it, and he’s convinced I’m a moron.”

“He thinks we’re all morons. Half of the time we prove him right.” Jared leaned back in his chair and crossed his booted foot over the opposite knee. “This town is special in a lot of ways.”

“There’s a newsflash.”

“We all look out for each other here. That’s the best part of a small town. Sometimes that turns into some gossip and drama, but overall, the nosiness is because we care. We’re like one big family.”

“You forgot the word dysfunctional.”

He shrugged. “Who isn’t dysfunctional in some way? That doesn’t mean there isn’t genuine concern and love behind what we do here.”

“Along with a load of snoopiness.”

“Which you encouraged last weekend at The Rusty Spoon, I heard.”

“Did you get pictures too?”

Jared ignored me. “Beyond the basic lure of the small town, this one comes with a bit…more, I guess you could say. I’m not one to put much stock in wives’ tales, but I can’t ignore the evidence in front of me.”

“That this town is hexed?”

Jared wheeled closer to the desk before folding his arms on the blotter and giving me a hard stare. “Is your brother miserable since Tabitha got pregnant?”

I blew out a breath. “No. He’s been insanely happy, other than worrying his kid might try to escape its hatch early.”

“And do I seem to be in hell since Bee got pregnant? Even though we weren’t married yet?”

“No.”

“Look around at the other couples in this town. Do any of them who’ve had an unplanned pregnancy and subsequently gotten married appear to you to be mired in the depths of despair?”

“Depths of despair is a little fanciful, but no.” I held up a hand before he could continue. “Fine, fine, I get it.”

“Do you?”
