He somehow draws it out of me just by looking at me intently.

Before I know it, I’m telling him just how crappy I think my life is.

Sounding more like a whining brat by the second, he only seems even more interested and concerned the longer I talk.

The sound of a car pulling up outside saves me. And I notice Kane’s head shift and his eyes narrow.

I’d say he was even annoyed for a second, but his features soften, and he shifts himself in his seat before standing up.

“Sounds like Abby’s home,” he murmurs.

“Yeah,” I rasp, crimping my lips. I wonder what we’d end up talking about if we were left alone for another hour or so.

No time to dwell on it, though. Abby makes her standard dramatic entry. And as usual, she’s stoked to see her dad.

But also a little surprised.

Her eyes dart from her dad’s to mine. And I’m sure Kane shoots me an almost pleading look.

Silently asking or telling me something I can’t understand, but I can feel it inside me.

Like we already share a secret of some kind.

“I thought you flew in tomorrow?” Abby quizzes him, hugging his strong neck and pecking his cheek, which only a girl her height could reach.

“I flew home early,” Kane explains. “I was gonna surprise you. Kinda got some big news…,” he starts, but Abby’s already talking over him.

Sliding from her dad to the middle of the kitchen as if it’s a stage, announcing to her dad the bigger news about the maybe job offer she’s waiting to hear back from.

Kane smiles over at me, a knowing look going with it because he’s heard Abby go on like this just as often as I have.

“Aren’t you gonna say hi to Abby?” Kane asks, waiting for his moment when Abby actually takes a breath.

“Oh, Jen’s staying over. I told her to let herself in,” she clips, waving off her dad’s interruption.

But I notice his expression changes when she tells him I’m staying over.

“You’re staying?” he asks me firmly.

I give a series of nods, hoping it’s good news for him too, but his face clouds for a moment.

He looks…troubled by the idea.

“We’re having agirl’s onlyweekend, Dad,” Abby chimes in. “Unless I get called away to New York, of course,” she reminds us both, spinning and twirling on the spot.

Making me feel dizzy but also a little irritated.

Do I want a whole weekend of listening to the Abby Gray show or some more conversation and fewer clothes with her way more mature and incredibly hot dad?

Hmmm…. I know which I’d prefer right now, but since Abby walked in, Kane’s whole mood changed.

And that magic I was feeling before? It kinda feels like someone just draped a big wet blanket over it.

“Didn’t you say you had some big news of your own, Kane?” I ask, wondering if that’s what made him look so gloomy all of a sudden.

I was assuming it’s good news, but now I’m unsure.

I only realize what I’ve just said, calling him by his name, when I notice Abby’s eyes narrow on mine.
