“I wasgonnafix us some breakfast,” he remarks, rolling his eyes.

Smiling to himself as he hears his daughter’s antics. Happy for her but happier now he knows he’s staked his claim on me.

Making sure he holds me as long as he can before we both hear Abby’s steps making their way down to the kitchen.

“Kane? I…,” I begin, feeling like telling him I love him is the only thing to say right now, but something stops me.

That inexperienced virgin in me, I guess.

I have no idea what I’m doing so far, and I don’t want to blow it by getting all mushy on Kane.

Especially right now.

“We can talk later,” Kane says firmly, the smile vanishing from his face.

Yesterday it might have hurt, but today I know it’s only to protect us all from the nuclear fallout that would happen if Abby knew.

She can’t find out. Not yet, anyhow.

But it’s clear that my and her dad’s little secret is the furthest thing from her mind once she makes a frantic entrance into the kitchen.

She looks like she hasn’t slept a wink, giving me a stab of anxiety until I remind myself that Abby’s never been a morning person either.

Her wild, tossing and turning bed hair, mixed with her twisting expression as she fights to get words out telling me that I’m not the only one who had an interesting night last night.

Glad I didn’t spend it in the bed next to her. By the looks, I wouldn’t have gotten much sleep anyway.

“Jen, where have you been? I’ve been calling you for ages,” Jen clips, turning her focus from me to her dad in her next short and swift breath.

“And Dad? I need a ride to the airport. Like right now,” she orders him, narrowing her eyes and giving him such a stern look I can’t help wondering if maybe she did overhear us last night.

But Kane’s a pro when it comes to handling his daughter, and I’m sure he’s seen and heard way more of her theatrics than I ever have.

“Okay, okay. Just calm down, Abby. We’ll get you to the airport. But how about you bring me up to speed on what’s happening first?” Kane asks, eying the plates of food he’s been busy preparing for breakfast.

“And only after you’ve eaten something,” he adds. “You only picked at dinner last night. I wanna see one of these plates empty before you go anywhere,” he tells her firmly.

Bringing her down a notch is sometimes the only way to deal with her when she’s all excited.

But Abby’s in full prima donna mode and waves away the suggestion. Growling she’ll get a cab if it’s too hard.

I hear myself clicking my tongue.

Annoyed with Abby for being so bratty, talking to her dad like that.

“What time’s your flight?” I ask her, crimping my mouth when she shoots me an impatient look.

“Eleven. But…,” she starts, and both Kane and I relax, moving toward the plates of food. Ignoring the urgency of Abby’s pleas.

Seeing as it’s all of ten past seven in the morning.

“You’ve got plenty of time. So take some deep breaths and come have something to eat,” Kane says soothingly.

Steering Abby to the table and leaning down, whispering something in her ear that seems to work like a charm.

From what I can see, he is proud of her.

It should make me jealous, but it doesn’t.
