“Okay, keep ‘em covered,” Kane croons, making me giggle, but I don’t peek.

I don’t think he could’ve surprised me much more, but opening my eyes once he tells me I can and letting them adjust to all the silverware gleaming in the candlelight, I’m truly speechless.

“I was trying to set things up quietly while you slept,” he confesses, guiding me over to a plush dining chair he pulls out for me, even unfolding one of the ornate napkins and putting it across my lap.

Only when he does, do I notice that he’s wearing a pretty nice outfit.

The kind of thing he might wear out to I don’t know…a special dinner with a special someone.

“I’m not even dressed,” I murmur, but Kane’s eyes dance with pleasure and a little mischief as he pecks my lips.

Assuring me that, if anything, I’m overdressed for the occasion.

“I couldn’t take you out anyplace,” he confides, letting his voice drop low as if other imaginary diners might hear him. “But as soon as you’ve had your last mouthful, I’m taking you again…right here on this fucking tablecloth, you hear me?” he rasps into my ear. Sending a fresh shiver of arousal down my spine.

My head nods instantly, wondering just how many courses I have to get through before I can hold him to that promise.

“But first…,” he continues, focusing his gaze on the gleaming silver domes that I know are covering those delicious food smells.

“It’s time to put some food in that belly of yours,” he grins, lifting off the first lid, and I suddenly feel ravenous for food.

Even hungrier for him. But most of all, I feel more special than I’ve ever felt in my whole life.

My eyes mist up again as I tell myself to stop blubbering every time something good happens.

“What, you don’t like pasta?” Kane asks, lifting another lid. “We’ve got steak… Chicken… I kinda just ordered a little of everything,” he shrugs.

“It’s just beautiful,” I sniff, leaning over and hooking my arms around his neck.

“Thank you, Kane. Nobody’s ever done anything so, so…nicefor me,” I manage to stammer without bawling my eyes out.

“You’rebeautiful,” he reminds me, pecking my nose with his lips. “Now, let’s eat. And I can fill you in on everything you missed out on while you were sleeping,” he grins, making my stomach lurch as I relive the phone conversation I just heard with him and my mom.

But he doesn’t look worried about anything.

In fact, I’d say he looks like a man who knows what he wants and is just putting the finishing touches on finally getting it.

CHAPTERSIXTEEN

Kane

It’s a little over the top, sure, but it’s everything I feel about Jen. So I rustle up a romantic dinner in the few hours she’s asleep without leaving the house.

It’s a start and not something I plan on giving up just because her mom wants her home.

This is her home now. Jen’s place is with me.

And as much as I wanted to avoid discussing things with her mom, I kinda have to once Jen lets on she overheard our phone conversation just as dinner was arriving.

But when she asks me if I’ve heard from Abby, before I can even get to how I think we should just tell her mom everything, I feel like the romance evaporates quicker than the steam from under the silver domes of food I’m lifting.

“I haven’t spoken to Abby yet,” I tell her. “Just got a text saying she landed, heading straight for rehearsals, apparently,” I add.

Jen’s expression changes from as happy as I want to see her to as miserable as she gets whenever I know she’s thinking about her mom and Abby finding out about us.

And as much as I don’t want it to ruin our evening, it’s something we’re both gonna have to face sooner or later.

“I think it’s best if you and your mom have at least one day off from each other,” I suggest. “And whether it’s tomorrow or in three months, we’re really gonna have to come clean, Jen,” I remind her.
