My knees buckled as Reaper helped me to the floor.

“Come on, Dylan. Don’t do this.”

“I got her,” I mumbled as a metallic taste filled my mouth. I didn’t like it. It tasted funny. I wish I had some gum or something to take the foul taste away.

“You did good, brother. So, fucking good.”

A man I never met said, “He needs a hospital fast. I can’t fix this here. Gio, where’s the nearest hospital?”

“Salvatore, gather the boys and get the hostages to safety. Reaper, have one of your men call it in. Let the local LEO’s take the credit.”

“Where’s Kitty?” I asked no one, really wishing my wife was here. She would like to see Caroline with a hole in her head. My Kitty would know what to do. She would make everything better. She was made like that. Where was she?

Laying in Reaper’s arms, he said, “She’s coming, Dylan. I promise when you wake up, she will be there.”

“We’re gonna live my dream, Max. We’re gonna move away and live in peace.”

“That sounds boring.”

I coughed. “I want boring. No more death for me.”

“Alright, brother. If that’s what you want.”

“Promise me.”

“Anything.”

“What you agreed to before. Promise me.”

“I promise, Dylan. I give you my word.”

“Thank you, Max,” I whispered. The room was so damn cold. Why was it cold? I was in south Louisiana. It’s never cold. I felt funny, weird like I was floating. There was no pain. I couldn’t feel anything as the darkness crept closer.

“DYLAN!”
