What a freaking mess today was. Not how I saw my eighteenth birthday party going. I was hurt when I saw Aaron dancing with Caity, but that didn’t compare to how unbelievably angry I was—am—when he punched Jesse. No matter what deeper feelings we might have, Aaron and I aren’t together. The fact that he let his jealousy get so out of control that he punched Jesse? Freaking ridiculous. Of course, me slapping him wasn’t much better. And I feel like shit about it. Actually, I feel like shit about pretty much everything. Except Jesse. He’s been a bright spot in an otherwise crappy day. But that’s a talent of his, especially with me.

After the punch, we went to the walk-in so he could get stitched up. Then Sarah, Jesse, and I grabbed burgers and milkshakes, and Jesse told us all about the girl he’s been crushing on. He’s bummed because she has a boyfriend. Guess I’m not the only one who isn’t with the person they want to be with.

By the time we got back here, the party was breaking up. Sarah went inside to help with cleanup, leaving Jesse and me alone on the front porch.

“I’m sorry you took a hit to the face for me.”

Jesse shrugs. “I’ve dealt with worse.”

“Well, I appreciate you being here for me tonight.”

“Always, Rae Rae,” he says, giving my hair a flip.

I feel a familiar warming between my legs at the huskiness in his voice.

Do I actually want to do this?

“You know, now that I think about it, maybe you owe me a little something.”

I cock an eyebrow at him. “What kind of something?”

He rubs his chin in mock thoughtfulness. “I think I might need you to kiss it and make it better.”

Leaning in, I gently kiss above his stitches. “Good enough?”

He shakes his head. “Nope. Lower and to the right.”

Meeting his eyes, I slowly bring my lips to his. His hand slides up the side of my neck, pulling me closer.

“Rae…” he says breathlessly against my lips.

I pull back and squint at him, shaking my head.

“After everything that happened, you still want to do…anythingwith me?”

He shrugs, then kisses me again. “You’re single. I’m single.” He grabs me and pulls me onto his lap. “Besides, you make me feel good.”

I gasp athow goodI make him feel.“Jesse…”

“I told you, you make me feel good. You turn me on, Rae. Don’t ever wonder if you’re hot. Because you are.” Then he pulls me back to his lips and kisses me intensely again.

“Mm,” I mutter against his lips. “Maybe we should pick up where we left off earlier, then.”

“Well, I do have a room upstairs,” he says cheekily, echoing what he said to me at the party earlier. I wasn’t planning to go up there and have sex with him. I’m still not ready for that. But I wanted to do more with him. Kind of like the night I broke up with Davey. Just some innocent shirtless fun.

He grins at me and pulls me up, leading me inside and up to his room.

When we get there, he closes the door and pushes me up against it, kissing me wildly. I pull his shirt off, then unbutton his pants.

He pulls back slightly.

“Tell me if you want me to stop at any point. Okay?”

“I will.”

Then I strip my shirt off and toss it on the floor, followed by my jeans.

He inhales sharply at the sight of me. Not like he’s never seen it before, but it clearly has an effect on him.
