“And miss out on the chance tosleepwith you?” he asks with a laugh. I laugh and give his chest a playful smack. Then he looks at me sincerely and says, “Come here.”

He pulls me tightly against him, then reaches to turn off the light. As we lie together in the pitch black, I say, “Jesse, thanks for today. It meant a lot to me.”

“Anytime,” he says. “Anytime.” And through the darkness, I can feel his charming asshole smile.

Jesse’s alarm blaring pulls me out of a deep sleep.

“Sorry,” Jesse mutters, reaching for his phone.

“What time is it?” I ask.

“If my alarm is to be believed, it’s nine-thirty.”

The events of the last twenty-four hours sink in as my brain fully awakens.

Yesterday was not good.

My stomach twists. I’m half-naked in bed with Jesse. And while I don’t regret what we did last night, I feel guilty aboutwhyI did it. Honestly, I feel guilty about a lot of things, especially how I handled things with Aaron yesterday. It’s all different in the light of a new day.

“Hey. You okay?” Jesse asks.

“Uh, yeah. Everything’s settling in.”

He nods in understanding, but awkwardness washes over us. And awkward isnothow Jesse and I do things.

“Well, this has gotten weird. How about we grab breakfast before I head back to school?”

Thank God, there’s that ease again.

“Sounds good, but do you have a T-shirt or sweatshirt I could borrow so I don’t have to wear the exact same clothes today?”

He laughs and opens his dresser. He pulls out a random band T-shirt and tosses it at me, then grabs a sweatshirt from his closet. An old baseball one with his last name on the back.

“Thanks, J.”

Then he tosses me my bra and we both laugh.

Jesse goes to take a quick shower, and I decide to head downstairs. When I walk out into the hallway, Sarah is coming out of Joel’s bedroom. Wearinghissweatshirt. We look at each other.

“You slept in Joel’s room,” I observe.

“You slept in Jesse’s,” she says back.

We exchange a wide-eyed glance and start laughing.

Jesse comes out of the bathroom right as Joel comes out of his bedroom. They exchange a look, both looking equally proudandlike they got caught doing something bad.

Sarah and I stifle another laugh.

“You guys wanna come to Marion’s with us for breakfast?” I ask.

“Heck yeah!” Joel says, a wide smile growing on his face.

After Jesse changes, we all head out the front door.

Jesse throws his arm over my shoulders, Joel throws his arm over Sarah’s shoulders, and Sarah and I wrap our arms around each other’s backs, and the four of us walk downtown together, my mind going over everything that has happened between Aaron and me, wondering if there’s a way forward from here.

I hope so. God, I hope so. I’m over this mess. I want something better.
