I inhale sharply, my eyes a little wild.

“What?”

I shake my head.

“Tell me.”

“I thought—” I shake my head again. “No, it’s too soon.”

He runs the back of his hand across my cheek. “No way. We’ve been almost thirteen years in the making. Tell me.”

“I thought that someday it’ll be my last name.”

A wide smile grows on his face. He leans in and whispers in a voice so low it’s almost a growl, “Yes, it will be.”

Whew.

Is it hot in here?

No? It’s just me spontaneously combusting?

I smash my lips against his. “You’re sexy when you talk like that.”

“Like what?”

“About our future.”

He smiles proudly. “Rae, we have an incredible future. This is just the beginning.” Then he gives me a very steamy kiss. One that’s even steamier given that we’re both naked.

He holds me closer, and though I can feel exactly how much he wants me, I can feel his pain, too. But if this helps himfeel betterthen I’m happy tohelp.Though we don’t have long before school, we manage to make each other very happy one more time.

Aaron

“Ladies and gentleman,” the announcer booms, “are you ready to meet your Ida Warrior seniors?”

The crowd cheers.

I lift my cap off my head and wipe my brow. Then I glance down at Rae who is beaming happily and looking fucking adorable in my jersey.

I followed her advice and had Coach pull me right after I nailed an awesome inning. I batted the next one, was able to score a run, and ended my last game on a high note. Even if it was only the bottom of the third inning.

It’s bittersweet. Okay, maybe more bitter than sweet most of the time, but tonight, it feels good to be honored. It’s not just about this last year, but all the years I’ve spent playing for this team, with my teammates. And as a whole, it was pretty damn awesome.

I’m second to last in the lineup. Most of the guys on the team this year are seniors, so there’s a bunch to get through.

Rae smiles up at me and my heart melts. She’s the calm in the storm for me right now. Losing baseball, still figuring out what I want to study in college, the transition from high school to college—it’s not easy for me. But having her by my side makes me feel like I can get through this.

My body stiffens slightly as I hear the announcer talk about where our outfielder, Ian, is playing next year. That’s the hardest thing tonight, hearing about everyone else continuing to play ball when I can’t.

Sensing my sudden change in demeanor, Rae squeezes my hand and whispers, “My bra matches your uniform.”

I choke on a breath and glance down at her. She’s looking ahead and smirking.

“Really?”

“Red lace.”

“Jesus, are you trying to give me a boner? I’m not sure the audience would appreciate that.”
