“Thanks, Coach.”

He nods as I stand up. “Take care of yourself.”

“Will do.”

I walk out of the room dripping with stress sweat. The coach from the college I want to go to is interested in me. And I can’t throw the way I used to.Fucking awesome.

“Hey, Aaron. Sent you a picture of my dress. Don’t feel like you need to match it too much, though,” Caity says, leaning against the locker next to mine.

“Cool. Thanks. And you’re good with meeting at Joel’s?”

“Yep. My parents will take pictures of Aiden and me at my place, then we’ll go our separate ways.”

“Sounds good.”

“Hey, Caity bug,” Aiden says, walking over and flipping Caity’s hair. “Aaron. Take care of my girl this weekend, okay?”

I glance from him to Caity. I want to be annoyed, but I know I’d say the same thing to someone else if they were taking Rae.

We’re all idiots.

“Of course,” I answer.

“Ready for class?” he asks Caity.

“Yeah. See you later, Aaron.”

“Bye, guys.”

I watch as they go and shake my head.Whatever, I have no room to talk.

After closing my locker, I head down the hall and make a right. Rae’s standing at her locker, laughing and joking with Joel and Sarah as Miles, Mackie, and Trevor stroll over. Then some junior—who I recognize but can’t think of his name—swaggers over to Rae.

Oh, hell no.

My fists clench, but before I can take a step forward, Joel slings his arm around her shoulders, looks at her flirtatiously, then kisses her cheek.

What. The. Fuck?

I’m staring them down now. When the guy walks away, Joel’s arm drops off her shoulders, but they’re still talking playfully to each other. Until they see me. Joel’s eyes flare and Rae squeezes his arm before bouncing over to me.

“Hey, Ace. Why are you trying to kill Joel with your eyes?”

“Is there something going on between you two?” I growl.

Her face goes blank, and I start to wonder if my tone was too rough. Her body starts to shake, and I reach for her, worried she’s about to start crying. That’s when I catch the mirth in her eyes. She bursts into a fit of loud laughter.

“What—what the hell—is wrong with—you?” She barely gets the sentence out as she gasps for air between laughs.

I replay it in my head. The junior walked over. Rae bristled. Joel quickly stepped up andpretendedsomething was happening because, of course, she doesn’t want to be approached by random guys.I’m a jackass.

“Sorry, I…” I stop short, rubbing the back of my neck.I was fucking jealous.

She smirks and grabs my bicep, leaning in close, and flirtatiously saying, “Were you jealous?”

What is happening right now? She’s flirting with me? Did she want to go to the dance as more than friends?

“May—maybe,” I choke out.
