Make her mine.

Finally, we’re on the right track again.

Chapter eight

The Elephant’s Gone

Rae

I’mjitteryashellas I pull my books from my locker. Two cups of coffee on a mostly empty stomach is too much. Got it. But I couldn’t help it. I was chugging coffee, trying to calm my nerves. It’s been almost thirty-six hours since Aaron and I basically admitted we love each other, and while we’ve shared some surface-level texts, we haven’t seen each other or trulytalked.I’m realizing now how dumb it was to drink coffee to try to calm myself. Now I feel like I’m going to jump on top of him when I see him. Which, so far, I haven’t.

I make my way back to the lobby and wander over to Joel, who is chatting with Miles. As I get to them, I see Caity giving her friend Aiden a big hug. They seem closer than normal.

“Hey,” I say to Joel and Miles. “Why’s Caity over there with Aiden like that?”

Joel and Miles look between each other, then Joel looks at me, eyes big. “You don’t know?”

“Know what?” I ask, immediately thinking that if she hurt Aaron, I’d kick her ass.

“She and Aaron broke up.”

My eyes go wide. “They broke up? When?”

Miles and Joel exchange an uncertain glance.

“He didn’t tell you?” Miles asks.

“No! What happened?”

“Aaron broke up with her the other night.”

“Which night?”

My heart pounds. Did he really break up with her? After our conversation? And if so, why didn’t he tell me? Why…? Why?WHY?

“Saturday night,” Joel says, still in disbelief that I didn’t know.

My mouth drops. I can’t believe this. What’s happening? And where is he?

I look around the lobby. Sarah and Mackie are standing with Hyla. Sarah catches my gaze, eyes big.

We exchange a look. I know she’s asking if I knew. I shake my head and she rushes over to me.

“Saturday night?” she asks me.

“Uh-huh.”

“Holy shit.”

“Yeah.”

“But he hasn’t—”

“Nope.”

The bell rings.

Fuck.
