“Maybe you should talk to him about that.”

“I wanted to talk to him, but he walked away! How about you get off my back and go tell him that?”

“I already did. Contrary to whatyouthink. I’m not Team Aaron. I’m Team Aaron and Rae. Always.”

Grumbling, I glare at him. “Damn it, Miles. You make it hard to stay angry at you.”

His lips curve into a smile. “You know I love you, right? I’m always here for you. I just hate watching you do dumb shit.”

“I know. Can’t wait until you do some dumb shit, and I can throw this back at you.”

He gives me an evil smile. “You mean some dumb shit like opening my heart and falling in love?”

I glare at him and he smiles.

“I’ll own it. You aren’t wrong about that. But you sure as hell know how to make a guy feel better about only hooking up. Misery is not what I’m looking for.”

I give him a half-smile as I swallow a bite of food.

“The thing is, when it’s not misery, it’s the best thing in the whole damn world.”

He smiles softly. “Noted.”

Thank God Miles is nannying with me. Those kids are like Energizer bunnies. Or maybe they’re where the Energizer bunny gets all his power. Son of a bitch, I’m tired.

I flop backward on my bed and wipe my arm over my face. I close my eyes for a second. Or what seems like a second. Until my phone goes off and I realize I’ve been asleep for a half hour. Reluctantly, I slide my hand down my bed and find my phone, bringing it toward my face before I even open my eyes.

Aaron: Be over in 10.

Shit!

Okay, I doubt anything is going to happen tonight, but I still don’t want to look and smell like I just crawled out of a dumpster.

I hurry through a shower and quickly get dressed, then go out to the back deck to wait for Aaron.

Aaron

As I key in the code for the gate to the deck stairs, I try to remember the last time I didn’t feel anxious walking up here.

Clicking the gate shut behind me, I make my way up the stairs to find Rae on the lounge bed, much like she was the night I came over after she slept with Jesse. The first time?Let’s not do that now.

“Hey, Ace,” she says softly, scooching over so there’s room for me.

I sit down next to her and take in the darkening sky. “Hey.”

She looks over at me, biting her lip. “So, about this morning… I need you to know, nothing happened between Jesse and me. We were just having a movie night and—”

I hold up my hands, wanting to trust her, and not wanting to hear any more about Jesse. “It’s fine. I overreacted. I’m sorry.”

She nods. “Yeah. Going to talk to Miles instead of hanging out with me was definitely an overreaction,” she says playfully.

Heat rushes to my cheeks. “I—he told you about that?”

“Not much is sacred.”

I chuckle at that. “Never is.”

“Thanks for coming over,” she says, moving closer.
