Sarah and Mackie turn to look at me. “No problem, Rae baby.”

“Where were you?” Mackie asks.

I drop down between them on the couch and Sarah pulls a blanket over the three of us. Mackie sets a container of brownies in my lap. I’m so glad I came to college with my best friends.

“Group project,” I say between bites of brownie. “Bane of my existence. But don’t worry, I get to spend the day tomorrow in the library working on that shit, even though most of my stuff is done.”

“Gross,” Mackie says. I nod in agreement, but I’m currently living in a state of ecstasy as I shove bits of brownie in my mouth. If I’m only capable of cooking one thing for the rest of my life, it’ll be these brownies.

“How’s nursing going?” I ask Sarah. We’ve barely talked lately, despite sharing a room, which is why this girls’ night was so important.

“It’s harder than I was expecting, but nothing I can’t handle.”

I smile widely at her. “Nothing stops you when you want something.”

She winks at me. “Damn right.”

Mackie clears her throat. “Speaking of. Who was the dark-haired hottie I saw you talking to yesterday?”

Sarah’s cheeks turn pink and her eyes widen. “Oh, you saw that?”

“Mhm.”

I poke Sarah in the arm. “Uh, details. If Mackie’s mentioning it, that means you were flirting. Spill!”

Sarah laughs and shakes her head. “I told you there were hot guys in the pre-med major.”

I cock an eyebrow at her. “How hot?”

“I mean, it’s subjective, yeah? But he looked pretty hot while we—”

I grab her arm as we shriek with laughter.

“Your first college hook-up! I’m so proud,” I say, trying to hold back a laugh.

“It was good. Not my best ever. But a solid seven with potential to go higher.”

“What about you, Macks? Any hook-ups on the horizon?”

She looks down at the brownies. “Uh, not exactly.”

“Mackenzie Montoya, what aren’t you telling us?” Sarah demands, pulling the brownies away and tossing them on the table.

“Hyla and I are… I don’t know. We’retalkingand we might… be a couple. I’m not sure. It’s confusing and with her shitty parents, there’s a lot to figure out, but we agreed that until we see each other next and talk in person that we won’t hook up.”

“Mackie, that’s so exciting!” I say as Sarah and I swoon a bit.

“Well, I hope it will be. With Hyla, there are plenty of unknowns. But I love her. I know that much.”

Sarah and I continue swooning and making all sorts ofawwnoises.

“Yeah, yeah, enough about me. What’s up with you and Aaron?”

I shrug. “We’re fine.” And it’s not a lie. Things have been fine. They’ve been good. He hasn’t had any other… outbursts. He’s been thoughtful and attentive over the last two weeks since our fight.

“Then what’s the face?” Sarah asks with concern.

“We’re fine,” I say quietly. “But I’m still not sureheis.”
