Miles grins at her. She smirks back. Then they both start laughing.

Miles downs his second brownie as Rae watches in equal parts horror and amusement.

“Jeez, when was the last time you ate?”

Miles grabs his third brownie and pats his stomach. “I’m a growing boy, Rae. Need calories. Any chance you have any milk?”

She rolls her eyes and huffs a sigh. “Use your manners or I’ll call your mother.”

Miles stops mid-chew and looks at her. He forcefully swallows and says, “Thank you.” Then he gets up from the couch and is about to walk away when he reaches back and grabs one last brownie.

“You have problems!” she shouts after him, but all she gets in response is the click of his door. She gestures to the plate. “If you want one, you better get one now.”

I laugh and grab one, taking a bite. She and Sarah make the best brownies. It’s an Abbott tradition, handed down from Bea to Kara to the two of them. They don’t even need a recipe anymore.

“So, what are these for?”

She shrugs. “I made a double batch. Took some to Kevin.”

“Ooh, Kevin. Why?” Mackie asks, walking into our room and flopping onto the couch next to Rae.

Rae elbows her.

“Seriously, why?” I ask. I don’t want her stupid traitorous brownies. Except that I do. Because they’re so damn good I can’t stop eating them.

“Cause he’s tutoring me in that—“ She gestures to my statistics stuff, ”—shit.”

My brow furrows. “Why didn’t you ask Miles?”

Her eyes dart toward his door. “I forgot he’s stupid good at that stuff. Kev caught me at a vulnerable moment and decided to save my statistics book from my wrath. He’s really good at it.”

I almost choke on my brownie as Mackie elbows Rae and says, “Good atit?”

Rae’s cheeks turn pink. “You’re like a twelve-year-old.”

“Not denying it,” Mackie sing-songs.

“Oh my gosh, stop. He’s tutoring me.That’s it.But even if it wasn’t… it wouldn’t be any of your business. Gosh. See if I give any of you brownies ever again.”

She looks pointedly at me, knowing I was—and still am—wondering if there’s more going on.

“Whatever. I’m heading back to my room. Save some for Joel before Miles eats them all. You comin’ Macks?”

Mackie nods. “Yeah, Mands and Sarah wanted to go grab dinner.”

“Perfect. Let’s go. Bye, Ace.”

“Yeah, bye.”

She gives me a little smile and a wave.

I look back at the brownies. Brownies she made for Kevin. Stupid brownies. Stupid statistics. Stupid trying to be friends with your ex when you’re still in love with them.

Rae

“Oh my god, Kevin…” I say breathlessly.

“Holy shit,” he mutters. His eyes find mine and he smiles. “You got them all right.”
