“I believe that there is no wrong answer in the pursuit of happiness. And that you, my boy, deserve every happiness, whether that is here and now, or something else, or perhaps—” her smile broadened “—somebodyelse entirely.”

“Leden will be—” I started before she cut me off again.

“Leden will be fine. It survived your father, after all. It will be fine without you. If that’s really what you want.”

“I don’t know what I want.”

She moved close, laying her manicured fingers over my forearm and turning us to the hall. “Yes, yes, you do. It’s time to start believing in that.”

Together we moved to the hallway, making our way down the hall and into the conference room, where I knew the board would be waiting, my shareholders, associated colleges, and family. There I’d officially accept the role, there would be champagne popped, a short speech broadcast to my employees, and then it would all be over.

I would be CEO.

And I could go back to my old life. The one I’d had before Ashlyn and Grove Communications had come slamming into it.

The thought alone was enough to make my dizzy with regret. While my mother was polished and primped beside me, it was her grip on my arm that kept me grounded, the pinpricking strength of her hand on mine all that kept me from collapsing into a useless puddle.

I shook my shoulders, jerking my chin upwards. I was a Macklen, and I knew what I wanted.

It was time to go get it.
