LIAM: Rude. But really, I don’t bring people there.

ASHLYN: Why not?

LIAM: Hotels are easier.

ASHLYN: Honestly?

LIAM: I thought we agreed to the truth yesterday, Miss Grove.

ASHLYN: I was just surprised.

LIAM: Ah, it’s changing your opinion of me again.

ASHLYN: Don’t worry. It can’t get much worse.

LIAM: Great.

ASHLYN: I’ll see you tomorrow.

LIAM: Use the elevator to come up to the fourth floor. Stairs are being renovated.

She didn’t respond after that, which was probably best for both of us because I’d become essentially useless during our text conversation. I’d flirted, really flirted, and totally ignored the commercial terms that I’d been reviewing all morning.

And I didn’t care.

Because again, it felt easy, normal, and enjoyable. I wanted to text her back again. Just to see if my chest would keep expanding, keep bubbling with that strange heat. For the first time in a long time, I was really looking forward to something other than a pile of real estate contracts.

It was nice.
