Grinning like an idiot, I closed my email to glance over my calendar. I mean, it was a 1:00 meeting. It was rational, normal. Two colleagues often shared lunch. Nothing scandalous or seductive about it. My fingers tapped against the screen.

ASHLYN: Sure. But only a salad. Extra lettuce, absolutely nothing fun on top.

No one actually enjoyed salad. That would keep me in line.

LIAM: Uh, okay. Aren’t you supposed to reply to the email?

ASHLYN: I thought you were just being dramatic.

LIAM: I don’t joke around about salads. Do me a favor and leave your heels at home? Those things are dangerous.

LIAM: And I don’t mean because you might trip.

I blushed ten shades of red and then tossed the phone to the opposite cushion where I could glare at it properly. My willpower was seriously lacking. It’d taken all of ten texts to get Liam Macklen firmly back into my life, straddling some kind of new line I’d just drawn between professional courtesy and sexual fantasy. I was going to need about three sweaters and a very tight skirt to be sure that I stayed on my side of the desk and he stayed on his.

I grabbed the wineglass and choked down a big mouthful. Oh, it was not good. My eyes watered as the cheap alcohol slid down my throat.

I needed to call it like it was. It was me, barely able to hang on to a conversation with someone who literally defined the term “a perfect ten.”

Meanwhile, I was a questionable-seven homebody whose habits included knitting, watching reruns of Court TV, and hanging out with my aunt. Hell, my Instagram was mostly just pictures of my lunch and selfies of me with historic buildings around town. I didn’t even have a pet.

I settled back in my sofa, opening my favorite social app and scrolling through to where Liam had been tagged in our photo from the club.

The first few comments were everything I expected. Remarks on his level of hot, a few on his clothes and my borrowed heels. But then right there, third from the top, LindseyLuvesU12 had commented, “They are so cute! I would love to see him settle down.”

I practically dropped my phone. I knew exactly how to sell Liam Macklen to his shareholders.
