“Well I, for one, need a large cocktail to get this thing started. Especially after that.” Tanner pointed at Sam first, then Ashlyn, and then slowly, his eyes and finger pointed to me.

I shook my head, surprised by the offer. “I’m going to stick to soda tonight. But enjoy yourself.” With a nod, Tanner strode off in search of the drinks.

“Are you going to be okay?” I asked Ashlyn when Sam finally slipped off to say hi to another party-goer.

“I think so. But I’m serious when I say this… I really need you to be CEO now. If your father somehow manages to retain his old position, Grove Communications is absolutely ruined.”

I chuckled. “It wasn’t that bad.”

“Oh, it was.”

“Maybe just a little. But I’ll be honest, whatever happens, I will make sure Grove Communications is well-provided for. My girlfriend works there.”

She slapped my side, giggling. “Stop.”

“No, I mean it. I don’t care what it takes. It was all worth it to see you serve my father up with a generous helping of his own nastiness on a silver platter.”

Sparkling blue eyes met mine. “You’re ridiculous.”

“You’re amazing.” The words slipped out before I had the good sense to shut my trap. But instead of pulling away, Ashlyn offered me a sweet smile.

Even in her new heels, Ashlyn had to tug my chin down in order to press her lips against mine. The kiss was chaste, more of a caress than a kiss. I was left wanting and wishing we were somewhere else where I could properly return that kiss.

“How much do you love long, boring political speeches?”

Ashlyn wrinkled her nose adorably. “Is that a trick question?”

My face split in half, and I strode down a nearby hallway, Ashlyn following eagerly behind, her laughter fueling my insanity. “Shh, woman, we aren’t supposed to be down here.”

I’d been to this venue a hundred times. There were rooms spiraling off the main floor, and there was bound to be an empty one. The first one, the knob won't turn. The second there were lights under the doors, but third, it was just right. Laughing, Ashlyn and I tumbled into the room.

It took all of two seconds to have her plastered back against the door, my hands on her hips and my mouth tracing the lines of her jaw, her neck as she leaned into me. That sweet little noise she made when I found her lips was enough to make every drop of blood in my body to flee straight south.
