I gave her a hard look.

She rolled her black-lined eyes. “I mean, aren’t you friends with the owner?”

“Thank you. And no, we have a no-work discussion policy at home.”

Peyton grinned at me. “How does that even work?”

“We have plenty of things to talk about, Peyton. Not shockingly, the internal communications strategy of large commercial real estate isn’t actually very good bedroom conversation.”

She laughed loudly. “Okay, okay. I get it.”

“And since we are going down a very personal road, which you started us on, I have to ask.” I put the coffee down, leaning in. “Peter Thatcher. Has he asked you out yet?”

Her jaw dropped. “I can’t believe you just asked me that.”

“Why?”

“Because I told you before, there’s no way.” Peyton swatted at the air between us. But her cheeks were pink.

I grinned at her. “He did, didn’t he?”

Peyton’s cheeks reddened further. “I’ll let you know thatIasked him out. Not the other way around. He’s out of town for some family stuff, but when he gets back, we’ll go grab a bite to eat or something. It’s not a big deal.”

“This is the best news all day.”

“Why are you so fixated on setting me up?” Peyton rolled her eyes, picking up her tablet as she marched to the door. “People in love are nauseating.”

“You should try it,” I sang out after her. My door closed softly. Going back to my computer and my coffee, I drummed my fingers against the desk.

The Leden handoff to Grove Communications was almost complete. That meant that while my title as Director of Marketing wouldn’t change, Peyton and I would now be acting as liaisons between the two companies. Even now I felt like the third wheel in our meetings. Before, I’d been using it as an excuse to see Cici. But suddenly that didn’t feel like enough.

Whipping out my phone, I decide to borrow the kid who had taken up residence in the board room.

Brady: Hey, do you have a minute?

Liam: An actual minute, or…?

Brady: Maybe 5 minutes. Just some thoughts.

Liam: Come on by. Rose knows you’re coming.

Brady: OMW

Liam: Don’t tell Thompson. He’s lurking outside my office.

I snorted, slipping my phone into my pocket and then turning to take the stairs up three levels to Liam’s executive suite. His fierce assistant, Rose, gave me a warning look, but didn’t stop me as I slide through the door and into his office.

“What’s up?” Liam said, his dark head lowered over his laptop.

“I have a problem.”

That got his attention. “What’s wrong? Is it work? Cici?”

“Easy, easy. It’s work.”

“Well, that’s a relief.” Liam’s smoky gray eyes jumped to mine. “It’s weird saying that. Anyway, spit it out.”

“I’m about to become obsolete.”
