She snorts. “What a line. Try again, handsome.”
“You drink by yourself a lot?”
Her expression shifts from a confident smirk to a mournful frown. She shrugs and then chugs her beer. She doesn’t speak until half the beer is gone. “Only when my family ignores me.”
“You too, huh?”
“Yeah,” she sighs while offering me an apologetic smile. “My father won’t fucking listen to me. And when he does, he does everythingwrong.”
I chortle and shake my head. “Sounds like my stupid sister.”
“Well, here’s to having bullshit family in common,” she says while raising her beer. “Aw, shit.”
She frowns when she realizes the bottle is empty.
And I don’t miss a beat.
I order two shots of bourbon and two beers from Mikey. “Here, this will help.”
“Always helps.”
“If only it would get my sister’s attention.”
She chuckles. “I’ve gotten my father’s attention, but it’s not the type I want.”
“Let me guess: he’s being a helicopter parent.”
She giggles. “Sort of. How did you know?”
“I don’t know. It was a wild guess.”
I smirk while my eyes drift over her body again. She straightens her posture while turning toward me, giving me a better view.
Amuchbetter view.
“Your sister,” she says as she lifts her shot of bourbon. “She being a bitch or something?”
“Something like that.”
The woman grins flirtatiously, a rosy blush growing on her cheeks. Whether it’s the alcohol or me isn’t clear.
But I’m hoping it’s me.
She gulps the bourbon and slams the glass upside down on the bar.
“Let me guess,” she teases. “She refuses to take your advice even when it’s good advice.”
I raise my eyebrows and smirk. “How did you know?”
She winks. “I can read minds.” Some of her amusement fades as her shoulders slump. “Shit, IwishI could do that. Maybe I could have stopped this stupid mess.”
“Can I ask what happened?”
“Since my father didn’t want to take my advice, he’s fallen down a shitty rabbit hole and taken me with him. We’re on the run.”
“God, I know what that’s like.”
She leans forward. “Seriously?”
