“Leo is not going to kill Emerson.”

I swipe at my tears and shoot her a look. All the skepticism I can muster. “That’s not what he said in the hospital. He said that if Emerson ever came for me, he was a dead man.”

“Do you think he’d come here?”

“I don’t know. Maybe he meant what he said when he left me. Maybe he’s going to stay away forever. But how am I supposed to stop looking for him? I can’t go to him if Leo’s going to be right behind me.”

Eva purses her lips, thinking.

“Leo doesn’t believe me. He thinks Emerson threatened me, or hurt me, and he won’t listen to me about it. You’re the one he listens to. He trusts you. He’ll believe you.”

“Look me in the eyes and promise me that he didn’t hurt you.”

“He didn’t hurt me.” My sister studies my face. I’m not a good liar. I can’t hide my emotions. She’d be able to see if it wasn’t true.

“And you want to go back to him for yourself, and not because you think you have to?”

“I want to be with him.” I swallow more tears. “I want a chance with him. But if I can’t have that, then I need to know he’s alive. I’m worried sick, Eva. Can you please just talk to Leo?”

Sunlight shifts over the courtyard, the breeze filling the space between us.

“It’s hard, because I shouldn’t have been with a man who…” Eva trails off. “It’s hard, because I just want to protect you.”

“Do you think less of me? For wanting this.”

“No, I don’t. I wouldn’t.” She squares her shoulders. “I’ll talk to Leo. But I can’t make any guarantees. You know how he is.”

I hug her around the waist, squeezing so hard she laughs. “I don’t need any promises. I just need a chance.”
