“You okay?” he asked softly as they drove.

“Not really. You?”

His fingers found hers, linked them together. “Not really.”

“I just…” She trailed off, staring out into the night through the car window. Eventually, she shook her head. “I just…poorMel.”

His rage was a palpable, dangerous thing.

He wanted to go after the man, to beat him all over again, to do worse than what Asher had done. God knew the fucker deserved it, deserved the pain, deserved permanent reminders of what happened to a man when he hurt a woman.

But the man had already been picked up by the police, was being held.

It wouldn’t do anyone any good right then.

Besides, Mel needed them more than she needed their anger.

So, he was tempering it. For now.

“Every time I close my eyes, I’m going to remember what she looked like…” A breath, more rage sliding through him. “When they took her back—” He shook his head, sharply. “Fuck, I’m not sure that Asher will be able to forgive himself.”

“He didn’t do anything.”

Jeremy’s fingers clenched on the steering wheel. “Yeah,” he whispered, “and I think that’s going to be the hardest for him to overcome.” He slanted a gaze her way. “It’s not that Ash doesn’t like Mel—not that hedidn’tlike her before. He…”

Fuck, the way he’d been when they’d taken Mel into a room without them, withouthim—

How he’d been tonight…

It wasn’t a man who didn’t care.

It was a man who cared too fucking much.

“He made it clear he didn’t want her,” Teresa muttered.

“Well, let’s just say that I know a little something of being theunwantedone.”

She turned to him, and her lips twitched. “Fine, be logical.”

“One of us has to.”

A swat, then, “I think she’ll be okay with him.”

“Asher will watch out for her.”

“Yeah, he—what the hell?”

He’d just pulled into her driveway…right next to a car that—

“Gabe,” she whispered as he slid to a stop, put his car in park.

The brother who’d—

Admittedly, his temper was spiking, mostly because he rememberedexactlywhat the fucker had said to his woman. He pushed open his door.

“Jeremy!”

But he was already rounding the hood of his car, barreling up the walk, grabbing the other man by his collar. “You are a fuckingasshole,” he snapped.
