She hadn’t slept, not at all, the entire night.

Every part of her told her to push, to press, to force the issue.

But how could she when she’d asked him to give her space and he’d listened? He’d respected her and…

It wasn’t Jeremy calling.

It was Rafe.

Never had she been more disappointed that her boss was calling.

“Hey,” she said, wanting to deal with whatever it was as quickly as possible. Because she needed to keep the line clear, needed to talk to Jeremy.

“I just wanted to see if Jeremy was coming in with you today?”

She frowned. “What?”

A beat of silence. “D-do you have a problem with him learning the ropes now? I know you’re not going to leave for a bit, but youaregoing to leave, and it’s probably going to be sooner rather than later.” He waited another beat, probably waiting for her to respond, but she was struggling to put the pieces together in her mind. “I think it would be good for him to walk through some projects.”

“What are you talking about?”

Okay, it was less her putting the pieces together and more her scrambling to keep up.

More quiet.

Then…

“You’re mad he wants to replace you?”

Wait.

What?

“I think he’d be a good fit, and he’s a natural. I wouldn’t replace you, you know that, but…”

He kept talking, but honestly, she wasn’t hearing him.

Because…

“T? You there?”

Jeremy wanted to replace her?

Wanted to work with Rafe?

That would be fuckingperfect.

Hewasa natural. And if he liked it, if it all worked out, he’d get the perk of being able to work with his best friend.

“T?”

“Rafe,” she whispered. “I fucked up.”

Thirty-Five

Jeremy

Okay, so he was feeling more than a little broody.
