“I’m just saying,” she repeated, “that you’re really annoying.”

“Yup.” A pop on the P. He blew on his knuckles, buffed them on his shoulder. “That’s my superpower.”

“I’m only going to the party so I can woo all those investors, get some capital, open my own business, and then promptly quit working for you.”

He grinned.

“Which means that you’re on your own withallyour punch lists.”

That grin faded.

“T—”

And suddenly she was feeling a lot more chipper.

She let her own smile out, jauntily making notes and crossing others off.

“Wait, T—”

She slapped the clipboard against his chest.

“Allof them.”

Wide eyes.

Delight sliding through her. There was nothing she liked more than being able to gleefully torture the people in her life that she loved. She smiled up at him, said, “And since that’s going to be the case in the not-so-distant future—”

“Teresa—”

“I think there’s no time like the present to start.”

“Teresa—”

“Oh,” she called as she moved to the stairs. “Don’t forget to note that the faucet in the break room is loose so the guys can fix it!”

And then she left him still sputtering behind her as she walked out.

He tugged at his bowtie, hating the tux more than he hated wearing suits at work.

At least at work he could take off his jacket, loosen his tie.

Tonight, he’d be stuck in this straitjacket until dinner was over.

Slamming his car door, he rolled his shoulders and decided that Cora owed him pizza and beer for “evening out the numbers.”

He’d probably be seated next to some flighty young millionaire’s wife or an old battle-ax destined to slice him to the bone at every opportunity.

Jaded?

Yeah.

But then again, he’d been to enough of these by now to understand his role.
