And then she saw Jeremy’s face.

Need.Hurt.

She’d wiped her lips like a little kid scrubbing off a kiss that was full of cooties.

“I—”

His eyes flashed, a bit of his well-known temper shining through.

Which was reason one for why this wasn’t going to happen.

She didn’t do yelling, even if it was packaged as just caring so much for someone that he lost his cool every once in a while.

Excuses. Bullshit caveman nonsense that she already had enough of in her life. She couldn’t deal with any more of it.

Which brought her to reason two.

She didn’tdosomeone treating her like she was a piece of porcelain, needing to be packaged in bubble wrap and kept in a box or put up safely on a shelf, lest she break.

She had enough of that in her life.

She couldn’t. She wouldn’t.

So, she couldn’t.

So, shewouldn’t.

“I’m going!” Wyatt called, bumping fully into the door, loud enough to alert everyone in the house that there was something exciting and dramatic happening on the back deck. “Nothing to see here. I’m going. I’m—”

For fuck’s sake.

Enough of this.

She moved across the deck, shoved Wyatt out of the way, leaving him for his twin, and letting herself into the house. Rafe had just entered the hallway, brows pulled together, no doubt having heard the commotion out back.

“Teresa, are you—”

She sidestepped him. “I’m heading out.”

“Wait.” He grabbed her arm. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” she lied. “I’m tired—” Tired of men’s bullshit. “And going to head out. I’ll see you Monday.”

“T—”

“Teresa!” Jeremy called.

Her eyes slid closed. She was really tired, really, reallytired of men and their bullshit. “I’m leaving,” she said, locking eyes with Rafe. “I’ll see you Monday,” she repeated.

He studied her face for a moment then nodded.

And because he was the protective older brother type, too, he stepped around her, blocking Jeremy’s progress, just like she knew he would. Jeremy and Rafe were best friends, but friends didn’t trump little sisters. And for all intents and purposes, she was Rafe’s little sister. “She’s going home, Jer.”

Jeremy ignored him. “Teresa.”

She didn’t stop, didn’t bother looking back.

Rafe would keep him from coming after her.
