Unfortunately, she thought she knew the answer to that.

But she wasn’t ready to admit it, definitely wasn’t ready to think about what that said about her—spending five years in a relationship with someone and at the end of it, all she could think about was that she didn’t miss Sam…

She missed the companionship.

And she’d lied to Jeremy, which was just adding to her asshole-ness.

Stepped on my heart.

Had he?

Or was she just thinking she should be feeling something and because she wasn’t—aside from feeling inadequate and insecure because shewasn’ta mess after a five-year-long relationship had ended.

Sam was great.

But there was something wrong with her.

Had to be.

There had to be something broken in her that made her this way. What normal person wouldn’t be distraught? Hell, her own mother had cried more when Teresa had broken the news of Sam moving in the first place.

When she found out that Sam was movingon…

Her mom was going to be a mess.

And after she passed along that the relationship was over, dealt with her mom’s sadness over that fact, Teresa would be here, in this hammock, wondering what was wrong with her.

Wondering why she didn’t feel.

Or didn’t feel properly.

Which was the same thing that she’d been wondering on that deck. Same as she’d been feeling when she’d cried, actually cried on Cora’s deck (and yes, it still counted as crying, even when it was just a couple of tears, especially since she hadn’t cried at anything other than a Hallmark movie or SPCA commercial in freakingyears).

And it was the same as she’d been feeling when she’d lied about those two tears to Jeremy.

Because she couldn’t tellhimthe truth.

He’d look at her like…

Well, like there was something wrong with her.

But now…

He’d kissed her.

And the kiss…

She sighed, opened her eyes again, staring up at the twinkling stars, remembering that kiss, rememberingeverythingabout that kiss. The softness of his lips, the roughness of his stubble, the sleek dart of his tongue, the strength of his body when he held hers, how big he was, how smallshewas, how safe she’d been, ensconced in his hold.

And…

What that kiss had made her feel.

Which was everything.

Three

Jeremy
