And he did.

He went home.

And then the only sound that filled her ears was theclickof the lock sliding home.

Twenty-Three

Jeremy

Christ. Not again.

He hadn’t slept last night, every part of him wanting to go back to Teresa’s, to talk to her and explain.

But he’d already tried pushing.

It didn’t work.

So, he’d decided to give her some space, and then he was going to explain later.

Because they’d made progress and there could be no more confusion, no more of her misunderstanding whom he wanted.

Her.

Only her.

Alwaysher.

Even if he didn’t understand what he wanted for life, the man he was if he wasn’t caring for everyone else all the time, he understood what his heart was telling him.

He needed Teresa.

She was his.

So, leaving her house hadn’t been easy, leaving and not checking up on her, making certain she was okay, had made it back home, wassafe, had been even more difficult.

But he’d given her the space she needed.

Even if it meant he hadn’t slept.

Plus side? He was in early to work. Which meant that he might actually catch up for once. Or maybe he could stay buried as always and take an extra-long lunch today. Just for shits and giggles and for all the times he’d had to skip eating, working through for the corporate machine he was getting really fucking tired of being part of.

But any of the pluses of him coming in early and that hopefully long lunch had been dashed the moment he’d walked through his office door.

Bianca was there.

“Jeremy,” she crooned, crossing over to him.

“You’re beautiful,” he said, trying to appeal to logic. There had to be some of that in there somewhere, right?

Her smile was unhinged. “Thanks, baby.”

“So beautiful,” he pressed on, “that you don’t want someone who doesn’t want you back, right?”

A hint of anger in her eyes, her nails digging into his chest. “Of course not,” she snapped.

“So…”

Those nails dug in a little deeper.
