Oh, and his lips were so fine and hot and…

Rachel opened to him and met his tongue in a battle of desire, both thrusting and parrying until they were forced to call a truce and come up for air.

“You’re right; I’m your protector. And you’re wrong about my not being interested.” He pressed another kiss to her lips. “I’m so interested, I’m afraid.”

“You? Afraid?” She blinked up at him. “Of what?”

“Of blowing it.”

“I don’t understand. Are you afraid you will lose your position with the Brotherhood Protectors if you sleep with me?"

He laughed. "No. That’s not what scares me. I’m afraid of losing my focus on the danger surrounding you. I’m afraid I’ll let my concentration slip just long enough for that killer to get to you.” He rested his forehead against hers. “I’m afraid of failing you and losing you forever. I can’t let that happen. I won’t.”

She looked into his eyes, her heart swelling with all the feelings she had for this man. “You care about me?”

“More than you know.” He laughed. “More than I ever thought possible.”

“I care about you,” she said. “Sleep with me.”

“I can’t.”

Her brow wrinkled. “Why?”

“Because I wouldn’t sleep,” he said, his voice lower, more intense.

Her mouth curved upward. “Who needs sleep anyway?”

He stared down at her for a long moment.

“Good grief, Griff,” she said, her patience slipping. “What do I have to do? Spell it out?”

He nodded. “I don’t want any misunderstandings about what you want.”

She gripped his cheeks between her palms and met his gaze. “Stay with me. Make love to me. Damn it! I want you, John Griffith.”

His lips spread into a smile. “It’s not nice to curse.”

She frowned, finding the man too sexy for his own good and downright maddening. “Then quit teasing me, and let’s do this.” She planted her hands on his chest and shoved him over to lie on his back. Starting at his lips, she kissed, nipped and tongued her way across his chin, down the length of his throat and lower.

She captured one of his hard brown nipples in her mouth and nipped the button tip.

“Hey.” He gripped her arms. “Let me show you how it’s done.” He winked and rolled her over onto her back.

She gave him a wicked smile. “It’s about time.”

He repeated the pattern of her path on her lips, chin and down her neck.

When he reached for the hem of her shirt, Rachel brushed his hands aside and rolled him off her. Ready to be skin-to-skin with the man and not waste another moment, she yanked her T-shirt over her head and flung it across the room. Her shorts went next, followed by her panties.

He lay on his side, his head propped in his hand, chuckling. “You’re stealing some of my fun. Undressing you is like opening a present. Half the fun is in the anticipation. It’s called foreplay.”

She pressed her lips together. “My body is already on fire. Shut up and get naked.” She reached for his shorts, but he moved away and rolled off the bed.

“Wait,” Rachel sat up. “Where are you going? Am I coming on too strong? Damn. I’m rusty at this.”

He laughed out loud. “Sweetheart, you’re perfect. I just need to get some protection before we lose our minds to lust.”

Rachel flopped back against the pillow. “I’m glad someone is thinking.”
