“You did,” Gunny said.

“Thorn and I met with Misty Lantz’s family and found out Alan had dated her for a while. She’d dumped him when he got too possessive and wanted to tell her who she could or couldn’t talk to. He followed her around so much that her father had to have a talk with him. They were glad to hear that he’d confessed to killing their daughter and that he won’t be around to hurt anyone else.”

Rachel leaned into Griff. “We spoke with Christy’s folks today. They were glad to finally know the truth and have closure on their daughter’s death. It doesn’t bring her back but knowing what happened and who did it helped them to understand.”

“And the best part is that Alan won’t hurt anyone ever again,” RJ said as she descended the steps carrying a large bowl.

Gunny plucked the ribs off the grill and laid them on a large platter. “Ribs are ready. Let’s eat.”

The team gathered around the tables, sliding onto the benches.

“I’d like to make a few announcements before we eat.”

Everyone turned to Jake.

Griff knew about one of those announcements, and he was happy Jake was going to make it.

“First,” Jake said. “I’d like to officially welcome Griff to the team. After successfully completing his first assignment, he’s firmly convinced this is the place he wants to be.”

Everyone at the table clapped and cheered.

Griff’s cheeks heated, and his heart warmed. He’d lost his team in Syria but gained another in Fool’s Gold, Colorado. He knew one could not replace the other, but he had a family again. Brothers.

And he had Rachel.

“Second,” Jake continued, “we have a recruit to the Brotherhood arriving next week, fresh from retirement. Former Delta Force Levi Franks.”

“I’ve heard of him,” Thorn said.

Cage nodded. “Me, too. He was a legend in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

“I worked with him on a joint operation with the Navy SEALs and the Army Deltas,” Sawyer said. “He’ll be a good addition to the team.”

“Last and certainly not least,” Jake smiled over at RJ, whose cheeks flushed a bright red, “RJ and I are going to have a baby.” He shot a glance at Gunny. “The wedding will be in a month’s time. You’re all invited.”

A rowdy cheer went up around the table.

Griff pounded Jake on the back, grinning from ear to ear. “So happy for you, man.” His heart was full for his new boss and friend.

He turned to Rachel, took her hand in his and squeezed it gently. Yes, he’d found a new home and family.

“I love this team,” Rachel said beside him. “They feel like family.”

He chuckled. “I was thinking the same thing. With you and the Brotherhood Protectors, I have a family.”

Rachel leaned into his shoulder. “That’s how I feel as well. I’m glad you’re staying. You fill me with hope for happiness.”

“Sweetheart, being with you fills my heart with more joy than I thought I’d ever find after all the tragedy I’ve witnessed.” He leaned over and planted a kiss on her lips.

Rachel stared up into his eyes and whispered for his ears only, “I love you, John Griffin.”

“I love you, too, Rachel West.”
