“Nae, it was a lass from one of the MacDonald families marrying one of the Campbells. A grand affair it was, but not a true gatherin.’ The Kendricks attended, as did Lady Samantha’s family. But mostly it was Campbells and MacDonalds.”

“Sir, your memory is amazing,” Samantha enthused. “You even remembered what I was wearing.”

“That’s because you were the prettiest of all the little lassies, all decked out in your wee plaid dress and matching tam.”

“Was I there, Grandda?” Braden asked. “I don’t remember it at all.”

Angus snorted. “That’s because ye spent the entire time off in a corner, yer head in a book.”

Ouch.

Samantha gave Braden a sympathetic grimace. “I didn’t remember either until your grandfather jogged my memory. But then it all came rushing back.” She nodded at Logan. “I especially remember you.”

Logan’s eyebrows ticked up. “And why is that?”

“Because you were rather . . . exuberant.”

“You mean loud,” Donella said.

Samantha tried to bite back a smile and failed.

“As for me, I’m sure I was the soul of courtesy,” Kade said with a grin. “But what about the twins?”

“Even louder,” Samantha replied.

While the others laughed, Logan snapped his fingers. “I remember now. Good Lord, I’d forgotten all about it.”

“You were representing your clan as head of family, I think,” said Samantha. “I don’t recall Lord Arnprior being there.”

Logan hesitated before answering. “Yes. Nick couldn’t make it.”

Kade frowned. “Oh, right. That was . . .”

“Now I remember that year,” Braden interjected. “Nick had duties at home.”

Samantha glanced at him and then at Logan, clearly puzzled by the sudden and odd undertone to their conversation.

Donella glanced toward the door. “I see the first guests are arriving. Ready to play hostess?” she said to Samantha.

“Oh, yes, I suppose so,” she said, sounding uncertain.

Donella smiled. “I’ll come with you, shall I?”

“Thank you. It’s been so long since I’ve been at a proper party. I think I’ve forgotten how to behave.”

Donella pointed to herself. “Former nun, remember? My social skills cannot be any worse than yours.”

As the ladies moved off, Braden gave Logan a sympathetic grimace. “All right, old man?”

His brother nodded. “It’s just odd when your past jumps up and smacks you in the face.”

The tragic death of Nick’s first wife was the reason he’d missed the event. It had been a difficult time for all of them and one that would only get worse in the years to follow, especially for both Logan and Nick.

Angus sighed. “Sorry, lad. Lady Samantha was right skittish about that scabby Lord Beath, so I was tryin’ to distract her. I didna think what it meant for ye.”

“I’m fine, Grandda. Not to worry.”

“It was a kind thing you did for Lady Samantha,” Kade said to Angus. “And your memoryistruly amazing, Grandda.”
