He grinned. “Yes, the family does have its good points, when we’re not making a ruckus.”

“I like a good ruckus, now and again.”

Braden settled her back in his arms. “I’m hoping our days of ruckusing are over.”

She chuckled. “Is that even a word?”

“If not, it should be. But what’s important is that a great injustice has been rectified. You have prevailed, my love. You can put down your sword now and rest.”

She sighed. “I can hardly believe it.”

“Because you’ve been living it for a very long time. But itistruly over, and do you know what that means?”

Samantha sat up again so she could see his handsome, wonderful face. His extraordinary gaze was filled with love—a miraculous love for her.

“It means we get to begin again,” he said. “It means we get to have a life, a good life with Felicity, our family, our work. It means that we finally have a future together.”

She craned up to press a tender kiss on his lips. His arms tightened around her, and he lingered over the caress.

When Braden finally let her go, she gave him a misty smile. “Aye, that, as the Kendricks would say.”

“Well, this Kendrick would also say that it’s time for us to be off to bed. If we sit here much longer, we’ll be seeing in the dawn.”

She snuggled back against him. “Soon. I just want to sit here for a few minutes and let the future sink in a bit.”

“All right, but if you fall asleep, I’ll have to carry you up to bed.”

“Oh, dear. Would that be a terrible imposition?”

He chuckled, the warmth of it vibrating through her. “Not in the least.”

Samantha settled into the security of his embrace, letting his strong and yet gentle love surround her. Sorrow had finally been replaced by joy. It was a quiet joy, to be sure, almost too new to feel real. But there it was, along with the promise of a future warm and bright.
