“Margo’s parents?”

“Yes. She was only ten at the time. Thankfully, she was spending the night with a classmate.”

Roland glanced at his watch. “There’s a rest stop up ahead. It will be a good place for you to change into your disguise.”

She lifted a brow. “What disguises do I have?”

“I have no idea. Probably a wig and a few changes of clothes. Whoever’s looking for us will probably generate a photo of you and spread it over their network.”

“I feel like a wanted woman.”

He tightened his lips, fighting the urge to tell her shewaswanted, no doubt by many men, including Special Agent Warner. He hadn’t missed the curious looks the agent had given him, as if he’d been trying to figure out his relationship with Lennox. The FBI had to have quickly figured out they were neighbors. But did Warner assume they were more than that?

“That means I’m a wanted man,” he said.

She turned to look at him. “What about you? Do you have a disguise as well?”

“Yes, but mine is nothing more than a baseball cap; something I never wear. And I intend to grow a thicker beard. That should be enough for me.”

He pulled into the rest stop, glad there wasn’t a lot of people around. After turning off the ignition, he sat there for a few minutes, watching to see if another car pulled in behind them. When one didn’t, he knew they weren’t being followed.

He glanced over at Lennox. “I can’t go into the ladies’ restroom with you, but I intend to be right outside the door.”

She nodded. “Okay.”

He reached in the back seat to retrieve the bag Stonewall had told him about then handed it to her. He pulled out the baseball cap and put it on, then they got out the car and went over to the restroom area. As he walked, he pulled down the tail of his shirt so the Glock in his back pocket wasn’t revealed.

“It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes,” she said.

“Take your time. I’m not going anywhere.”

When she went inside, he leaned against the brick wall, observing his surroundings. Most of the people there appeared to be families embarking on their summer vacations. He smiled. His mother had made it a point to take him somewhere for a week every summer. She’d been a strong believer in spending quality time with those you love. One year, they’d even taken a road trip to Disney World in Florida.

“So, what do you think, Roland?” Lennox said, coming out of the restroom.

He blinked. She looked beautiful. The honey-blond curly wig accented the coloring of her features and was styled in a way that crowned the shape of her face.

Ever since he’d known her, she’d worn her hair straight and down her back, except for when she’d twisted it into aknot on top of her head. And with those stilettos, she always looked more like a model than a medical examiner.

But this short, curly wig definitely gave her a different look--one that was naughty and sassy.

She’d also changed her clothes, and was now wearing a pair of jeans and a blouse. And damn, could Dr. Lennox Roswell wear the hell out of those jeans! And then, to finish off the ensemble, she still wore those sexy-as-sin stilettos, making her a sizzling, sexy package.

“Roland?”

He dared not say what he actually thought. So instead, he said, “You look really different. I think it will work.”

For him, it had already worked too damn well.

“Thanks for letting me know, Margo. Keep me advised of any further developments. Goodbye.”

Frazier disconnected the call, then stood to move away from his desk and shove his hands into his pockets. He knew the type of business Roland was in, but damn every bone, nerve and cell in Frazier’s body told him he was too old for this. He thought those days were over when Margo finally got married.

But the person who had him on edge now was Roland--the brother he hadn’t wanted to accept. And now, he was as worried about Roland as he had been about Margo.

It was bad enough Roland had been involved in a shoot-out yesterday, but now, he’d just learned that he’d been in another one today. And not just a shoot-out, but an ambush. Jeez.
