“How do I know he wasn’t just playing me?” Nina asked. “That I didn’t feel the way I did because he was so good, so practiced atit?”

“It’s a fair question,” Karensaid.

“He came back,” Nina said. “He said he’s willing to change, or to try anyway. Doesn’t that count forsomething?”

Karen adjusted her purse and flipped idly through the clothes on the rack. “It does,” Karen said softly. “It counts for a lot, especially given his reputation.” She stopped moving and touched Nina’s arm again. “I just worry about you, that’sall.”

Nina met her gaze. “I’m a big girl. I need your support more than yourprotection.”

Karen leaned over to give her a hug. “You have it. You know youdo.”

“Thankyou.”

Karen pulled away. “So whatnow?”

“I’ve spent eight months alone, figuring out who I am and proving I can stand on my own. I think now I give myself permission to go with mygut.”

“Follow your heart?” Karen’s tone made it clear what she thought of thecliche.

Nina smiled. “Maybe.”

“Suit yourself,’ Karen said. “Just remember: the heart is a lying fool. Don’t say I didn’t warnyou.”

Nina laughed as she moved around the rack to the other side. She pulled her phone out of her bag and looked at their textexchange.

Another question lingered behind the one on the screen. It was the only question thatmattered.
