Hot. Cute. Endearinglynerdy.

All true. And did Nina forgethot?

She had a flash of him leaning in at Whistler to invite her to dinner, his nearness conjuring flickering candles and long kisses and intimate sighs and murmured conversation in thedark.

“I’m surprised too,” Nina said. “It was definitely easier before I saw him up close andpersonal.”

“Emphasis on the personal,” Karensaid.

Nina laughed. “Exactly.”

“Are you going to tell him about Jack?” Karenasked.

“I’m going to tell him everything this time,” Nina said. Karen had been the one who convinced Nina she didn’t owe Liam — or Jack — confessions about seeing other people unless they asked. In an era where it seemed like everyone was sleeping with everyone else, swiping right just for the night and happily parting ways the next morning, it had seemed the modern thing to do. In hindsight, putting off telling Liam about Jack had been cowardly, a mistake she wouldn’t make again. “Anyway, it might not evenmatter.”

Karen looked at her over the rack of clothes between them. “What do youmean?”

Nina shrugged, paused at a slim skirt in French blue, and kept flipping hangers. “It’s justdinner.”

Karen laughed. “This is not just dinner, and you knowit.”

“No, I don’t. We haven’t spent any real time together in over a year. People outgrow each other all thetime.”

“You spent time together at Whistler,” Karen said, “and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who got wet panties from all the sparks flying between you and LiamMcAlister.”

“Can we not talk about your wetpanties?”

“I’m just saying, the chemistry waspalpable.”

Nina didn’t bother denying it. Their mutual attraction had hung in the air likevapor.

“Do you think it’s a coincidence that he’s taking you to the River Cafe?” Karenasked.

Nina looked up “What do youmean?”

“It doesn’t seem like his style, that’s all,” Karensaid.

“Maybe he just wants it to benice.”

“Maybe.”

The hesitation in Karen’s voice stopped Nina’s flipping of hangers. “What else would itbe?”

“Maybe he’s insecure,” she said. “AboutJack.”

“AboutJack…”

Karen met Nina’s eyes. “Come on, Neen. When you broke up with him you told him you’d been seeing JackMorgan.”

“Wait… you think Liam feels like he has to compete with Jack?” Ninaasked.

“I have no idea,” Karen said. “But it would be natural, wouldn’t it? Having to compete with Jack Morgan for Liam must be a little like one of us having to compete with CateBlanchett.”

“Why do men compete based on money and we compete on appearance?” Ninaasked.

“I don’t make the rules,” Karen said. “Besides, I’m sure Cate’s rich in her ownright.”

“But that’s not why you used her as acomparison.”
