She leaned against the wall in her bedroom, took a couple deep breaths, and reached for the black clutch she’d left on thebed.

“All set,” she said when she returned to the livingroom.

He started for the coat closet, his nonchalance overly casual. “I’ll get yourcoat.”

She stepped in front of the makeshift darkroom hidden by the closet door. “Nicetry.”

“Not even apeek?”

She shook herhead.

He held up his hands as if in surrender. “I get it. Figured it was worth atry.”

She pulled her coat from a hook hanging near the door. Liam took it from her and eased it over her shoulders. His touch, both comfortingly familiar and intoxicatingly new, made it hard to breathe. If she turned her head just a little, she could press her lips to his, turn in his arms, wrap her arms around hisneck.

He squeezed her shoulders as he settled the coat around them. “There you are,” he said near herear.

He opened the door and they stepped out of the apartment, Nina feeling like she’d just dodged a bullet — and knowing it wouldn’t be thelast.
