“I know.” He tightened his hold on her. “And I understand that you may want to see what that’s about, but now that the South Africa project has been officially offered to me, I wanted to throw it out there. I wanted you to know that I want to be with you, Nina. That I meant what Isaid.”
They’d tiptoed around his declaration of love for her, and she’d been glad he hadn’t repeated it. She wanted to say it in her own time, when it felt right to her. She appreciated that he was giving her room to do that, but the words couldn’t be unsaid and she couldn’t help feeling the trip to South Africa would unintentionally force herhand.
She lay next to him on her side so she could look into his eyes, slipping her fingers into his hair. “I want to be with you too, but it’s a big decision. Can I think aboutit?”
“Of course.” She tried not to see the flash of disappointment in his eyes. “I leave next month. Let me know as soon as you can.” He hesitated. “AndNeen?”
“Yeah?”
“It’s okay if you decide it’s not for you. This isn’t an ultimatum, an all-or-nothing thing,” he said. “If you decide to stay in the city, we’ll make it work, fly back and forth when we can. Six months isn’t thatlong.”
She smiled. It was just like Liam to take the pressure off, to think abouther.
“I’ll let you know soon.”
