“We’re going to include stories of the people our projects help — in the States and abroad — as well as accounts from volunteers who have worked on various projects. We think it will be powerful for people to read about those experiences from a first-person perspective,” Robinsaid.

“And exponentially more powerful if those stories are accompanied by the right photographs,” Jasonadded.

“You want me to take pictures for your book?” Ninaasked.

“You have the eye we’re looking for — intimate and candid,” Jason said. “And we believe you can bring the same kind of universality shown in your current collection to the people who will be subjects of thebook.”

“But that’s not me. That’s a product of the subject.” She looked at Jason. “The experience of being a child is universal, like yousaid.”

He nodded. “That’s true, but Robin and I agree that it takes a certain vision to highlight that universality, and you have thatvision.”

“So I would goto…”

“India,” Robin finished with a laugh. “This summer. We’d send you to some of the other project sites to take some quick shots in the fall, but most of the work will be focused on the India project thissummer.”

“I just… wow…” Nina took a deep breath. “I’m sorry. This isn’t what Iexpected.”

“It’s a lot to take in,” Jason said. “Unfortunately, we don’t have a lot of time. But Robin and I — and everyone else working on the project — agree you’re the right person for thejob.”

“This is probably the wrong thing to say, but can I ask, why me? I mean, I appreciate your comments about my work, and I don’t doubt they’re sincere, but there must be tons of photographers who would jump at thisopportunity.”

“I wouldn’t say tons — it’s going to be hotter than hell and the job pays basically nothing — but there are probably a few,” Robin said. “We wantyou.”

“I’m just… not very experienced.” She was breaking Liam’s rule of not shitting on her own shit, but she didn’t want to misrepresent her ability toJason.

“That’s one of many reasons we think you’re the best person for the job,” he said. “We’re looking for a fresh eye, a fresh perspective, not slick —human.”

“We leave for India next month and will be back in the city in late September,” Robin said. “Of course, all your travel expenses will be taken care of, plus meals and lodging. Although I should warn you, the lodging is primitive by Americanstandards.”

“There’s a small stipend as well,” Jason said. “I’ll have Joan email you thosedetails.”

“I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this opportunity,” Nina said. “I’ll need a few days to consider it — I have another job and an apartment and a cat — if that’sokay.”

“Of course,” Jason said. “Can we call itMonday?”

Monday. That gave her four days to make one of the biggest decisions of herlife.

“Monday’sgood.”
