She nodded a little and squeezed his hand. “What about you? Are youokay?”

“Me?” He shook his head and suppressed a half-crazed burst of laughter. “I’m not the one who was shot.” He wished it had been him, wished it with every fiber of his being. “I’mfine.”

She licked her lips and swallowed. “Watching other people get hurt is worse than getting hurt. At least I gotdrugs.”

Now he laughed, the sound harsh amid the beeping of machinery monitoring Kate’s vitals. “You’recrazy.”

“Runs in the family,” shesaid.

“You’re funny when you’re on drugs, you know that?” She smiled, but he could see that she was getting tired. “The doctors told me. About thebaby.”

“I was going to tell you when this was all over. Are you…happy?”

“Do you have to ask? It’s all I’ve ever wanted. A chance to do it all again. You and me and Griff and our newbaby.”

He wouldn’t take a single second forgranted.

A tear leaked down her temple and into her hair. “Forreal?”

“Forreal.”

“Hey, Dec. Do you think you can bring me something from home since I don’t know how long I’m going to be in here?” sheasked.

“Anything.”

“I need…” He leaned in to hear as her voice faded, her eyes fluttering closed. “I need myiPad.”

His laughter caught on a sob. He lay his head on her hand andwept.
