“Good,” Lyon said. “And Alek?”

“Yeah, boss?”

“Keep this tight. Three or four people at the most. Outside assets if possible. Pay them well.” Lyon had only recently earned the loyalty of his men. Expecting them to risk their positions in the bratva for him was asking too much. It would make them nervous, and nervous men didn’t make for a stable organization.

Plus, there would be more confusion when word got out. Lyon didn’t like confusion, but it had its place. In this case, it would give him time to address the accusations that would come, and it would give Ivan time to smooth things over with the Spies.

“You got it,” Alek said.

Lyon could almost hear the gears turning in Alek’s mind: pay off a couple coast guard dispatchers to send Musa’s containers to the wrong port, or better yet, deny them entry altogether. Or in the absence of that, pay off some street thug to set fire to the container as it approached the Port.

Whatever. It just had to be done. And quickly.

Disrupting the supply chain — obvious downsides aside — would have the added benefit of showing the men that Lyon had more at his disposal than violence. As with confusion, violence had its place, but the bratva was rife with men like Musa who knew nothing else.

Lyon aimed to show he had what it took to lead.

“Keep me posted,” he said before disconnecting the call.

He started the car and pulled away from the curb near the park, Ivan’s final words resonating in his mind.

… it might be wise to hide your pretty new wife.

Alek would work quickly on Lyon’s orders.

Which meant Lyon had to get Kira out of the city before the shit hit the fan.
